Policy for Admission of International Students

International Affairs

JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research (JSS AHER), Mysuru in compliance with the approval of the authorities agreed in principle to open admissions to International Students through the International Students cell. The admission of International Students has started from the academic session 2008-09. The Academy has created a cell to look after the matter related to admissions of International Students. This INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS CELL headed by DEPUTY DIRECTOR (Academics) and cell supports the process of admission and accommodation of all the international students

International Student Cell(ISC):

International Students Cell (ISC) is set up at the University for Foreign Nationals, as a single window to deal with admission and guidance of Foreign students. This Cell will not only control the admission of the students but will also provide necessary guidance for securing visa, registration with FRRO & taking care of general well-being of students.

International Students

Introduction:

These rules define the procedure for the admission of International students to various courses at JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mysuru and its constituent colleges/Departments. These rules are based on General Guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC), Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and Statutory / Regulatory directives issued from time to time.

Under UGC Guidelines, ‘International Students’ will include the following:

  1. Foreign students: Students holding passports issued by any foreign country including people of Indian origin who have acquired the nationality of foreign countries.
  2. Non Resident Indians (NRI): Only those Non Resident Indian students who have studied and passed the qualifying examinations from schools or colleges in foreign countries will be included as international students. This will include the students studying in the schools or colleges situated in foreign countries even if affiliated to the Boards of Secondary Education or Universities located in India, but will not include students studying in those schools or colleges (situated in India) and affiliated to the Boards of Secondary Education or Universities of the foreign countries. The students passing the qualifying examinations from Boards or Universities located in foreign countries as external students and dependents of NRIs studying in India will not be included as international students. Entry level status of International students on entry to the country will be maintained.

Documents required for admission of International Students:

  1. Visa: All the international students will require a student visa endorsed to JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mysuru for joining full time courses. No other endorsement is acceptable. Students wishing to join a research programme will require a research visa endorsed to this Institution. The visa should be valid for the prescribed duration of the course. Visa is not required for NRI students. Students who are doing full time courses, in some other institutions, do not require a separate visa for joining part time courses provided that their current visa is valid for the entire duration of the course, within the JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mysuru.
  2. No Objection Certificate: All international students wishing to undertake any research work or join Ph.D. or M. Phil. programmes will have to obtain prior security clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the approval of Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India and this approval must be endorsed on the research visa.

Visiting students (Under MoU / Non-MoU)

Foreign Nationals registered for a degree in a recognized Institute/University and who are officially sponsored by that Institute/University to carry out Course work / Research or to avail laboratory or other facilities at JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mysuru for a period not exceeding two semesters can be accepted as visiting students under the MoU or otherwise. Admission of Foreign Nationals under the MoU will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions spelt out in the MoU agreed to between JSSU and the Country/ Government/University/Institution concerned. Students have to bear the normal living expenses including boarding, lodging and travel. Accommodation if required will be provided in Hostels on payment basis.

Admission of International Students:

Admission of all the international students will be done through the International Student Cell of JSSAHER. The students will generally be admitted in the beginning of the course.

The information on the courses available, eligibility requirements, application form and admission procedure are available in the prospectus or the website of the University

The eligibility application form shall be submitted to the International Student`s Cell along with the prescribed fees and documents. The Cell will forward the filled application to the eligibility committee for checking the eligibility of the candidate and after recommendations of the eligibility committee, the cell will issue the eligibility certificate and provisional admission letter to the candidate. This is required to get the visa and to complete other formalities.

On obtaining the student visa, the student shall complete all other formalities of the University such as payment of fees, submission of transcript etc.. The student should then report for final admission to the institute / department where he/she wants to join the course. The next step is to fill up and submit the admission form to the concerned institute / department and pay the prescribed fee. After this, the student should undergo the medical examination.

General Notes

Candidates admitted to any Course/programme in JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mysuru shall not be eligible to pursue simultaneously any other full-time Course in this or in any other University/Institution.

Eligibility Committee

On the basis of the recommendation of the authorities of the University, an Eligibility Committee is constituted for the verification of Certificate/Degrees of the International Students.

The functions of eligibility Committee shall be:

  1. To determine the equivalence of 12th grade/Degree/ Diploma/ Certificate or other academic distinctions of other Universities/ other Institutions on the basis of its Course Curricula and its examinations.
  2. To consider and determine the eligibility of candidates from other Universities/ other Institutions for admission under Lateral entry/Migration scheme.
  3. To map the course units already completed by the candidates in other University/ other Institution, in the most appropriate Course of Study of the University and determine the equivalent Grade point

Application Procedure for International Students

Applicants seeking admission to UG and PG programmes of this University and have passed a recognized examination are advised to send their application form on the prescribed form (which can also be downloaded from the University website www.jssuni.edu.in) along with duplicate Photostat copies of the transcripts to The Deputy Director (Academics), International student cell, JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Sri Shivarathreeshwara Nagar, Mysuru -570015. Karnataka, India (E-mail: international@jssuni.edu.in), as per schedule announced in the University website. International students are required to follow the rules governing entrance tests for professional courses as announced by the Government of India / Government of Karnataka from time to time. For other courses, University’s regulations will be followed.

International students have to follow the following steps for applying for admission in different programmes of JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research:

For those International students who are already studying in India or having an Indian degree (for all programmes):

  1. Channelize their admission application form routed through their Embassy / High Commission / Consulate in India (for the purpose of verification of their educational qualification viz. marksheet, degree…)
  2. Application form should be routed to University through Embassy / High Commission / Consulate addressed to The Deputy Director (Academics), International student cell, JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Sri Shivarathreeshwara Nagar, Mysuru -570015. Karnataka, India (E-mail:international@jssuni.edu.in).
  3. The Office of the International Student cell, JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research will forward the application to Eligibility committee to obtain eligibility as per regulation
  4. The Deputy Director (Academics), International Students, JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research will issue the provisional admission letter to applicant.
  5. This provisional admission letter will be sent to the concerned Embassy.
  6. Then the Embassy will inform the applicant to take admission in JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research in their choice of program.
  7. The applicant will go back to their country of domicile for getting visa formalities (student visa for undergraduate and postgraduate course; Research visa for Ph.D. course).
  8. After getting the Student/Research VISA, they can get confirmed admission in their choice of program after paying the University and college Fee.
  9. Admission of international students will be confirmed only after verification of original certificates, medical fitness test and payment of required fees.
  10. Within 14 days of arrival in India students must register their names with the police in the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) of the local Police.
  11. For Foreign students who seek admission through a MOU between their Government and JSS AHER, the policy for admission is as per GOI policy for professional courses and for the other courses, JSSU regulations will be followed.

For those International students who wish to apply from their own country (Those who are outside India):

  1. Channelize their admission application form routed through Indian Embassy/ High Commission/ Consulate in India (for the purpose of verification of their educational qualification viz. mark sheet, degree…). The rest of the procedures are the same as mentioned above from ii-x).

Following the above mentioned procedures, If the candidate meets the eligibility requirements and is found eligible, University will issue eligibility certificate and provisional admission letter to him/her. A copy of the same letter will be endorsed to the concerned Indian Mission in the country of domicile of the candidate on the basis of which the concerned Mission will issue a Research / Student’s VISA so that the student can come to India and join the University. No International student shall be admitted to this University without a Research / Student’s VISA. Such Student’s VISA will be extended by the Ministry of External Affairs after ascertaining that the student is pursuing his/her studies.

General Eligibility Criteria for International Students

  1. 12th grade / Degrees/Certificates of the International Students should have been recognized and approved by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU)/ Commonwealth Universities/ International Association of Universities (IAU) as equivalent to the corresponding Indian Degrees/Certificates.
  2. They hold a valid passport from their respective countries.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  1. A candidate studying in the final year of or having qualified for a Degree in General Course of Study from JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research or any other University/Institution shall be entitled to apply for admission to the next higher course/Degree in that line.
  2. If the applicant has passed the qualifying examination where grades are awarded:
    1. Where the grade sheet doesn’t mention the equivalent percentage of marks from grade points, the candidate should submit a certificate of conversion from the concerned institution mentioning either the converted percentage or the formula for the actual conversion of grade point average to percentage of marks and
    2. Where the grade sheet itself mentions the equivalent percentage of marks from the grade points or formula for such conversion, the candidate should get both sides of the Degree/Grade Sheet photocopied showing the equivalent percentage of marks/conversion formula and enclose with the Application Form.

Eligibility for Admission to Under Graduate Programmes

Evidence of required academic performance must be in the form of certified English transcripts listing all the programmes with the grades or marks earned. Transcripts in languages other than English are not acceptable. Applicants for Under-Graduate Course must have completed the 12 years or 10+2 years of formal schooling. The applicants who have passed final School Certificate Examination of twelve year duration are advised to apply as per schedule announced every year for admission in academic session commencing each year. However, applications can be accepted subject to necessary information issued by the University authorities from time to time. The minimum admission requirement in terms of the percentage of marks that are required by a candidate for being admitted to a course varies from year to year.

Eligibility for Admission to Post-Graduate Programmes

For admission to a post-graduate programme of studies, a candidate must have completed 12 years or 10+2 years of formal education at the School level followed by a Bachelor’s Degree. However, the admission to post-graduate programmes is rather restricted and the applicant with excellent academic records stands a fair chance for admission.

Eligibility for Admission to M. Phil. and Ph. D. Programmes

JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research also offers M. Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. The minimum admission requirement for the research degree (Ph.D.) is a post graduate degree of an Indian University or any other degree recognized as equivalent to it. The admission for these programmes is very limited and is decided by the respective colleges on the basis of a very sound academic record along with a detailed research proposal.

Age Requirements

No candidate is qualified for admission to the University in the first year of the undergraduate degree course unless he/she is 17 years of age before 31st December of the academic year in which he/she seeks admission.

Admission Procedure

Submission of Form:

The Applicant can personally submit or send by post the printout of the application form along with copies of the certificates and other necessary documents to the Director (Academics) International Admission Cell, JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mysuru.

Before Submitting the form, Admission Section will check the following:

  1. The deadlines for submitting the form.
  2. Whether all the required documents are enclosed and
  3. Form is attested by the Indian Diplomatic Representative or a responsible Official of the Ministry of Education of applicant’s country or an Official of the applicant’s country’s Embassy / High Commission in India.

Selection Process

The Applications are forwarded to the eligibility committee nominated by the University for screening the applications of foreign nationals. The committee short lists the applications according to the eligibility requirement as per JSSU norms.

Candidates may visit www.jssuni.edu.in for the detailed information regarding the eligibility requirement and other formalities as prescribed.

All foreign nationals with foreign qualifications are required to submit the Equivalence certificate from Association of Indian Universities (AIU) with the application form. AIU address is given below:

Procedure for applying and seeking equivalence certificate

Admission Application Form of Foreign students must have an Equivalence Certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), www.aiuweb.org.

The students are advised to send the following documents to the Association of Indian Universities for obtaining Equivalence Certificate along with the prescribed fees in favor of “Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi”.

  • 12th grade/Degree/Certificate together with the year-wise Academic Transcript duly authenticated by the Indian Embassy in the Country or its concerned Foreign Mission in India.
  • Accreditation status of the University/Institute which the student has last attended.
  • Copies of the academic Certificates from Higher Secondary onwards (where necessary)

The onus of Certification for Equivalence from AIU is on the candidate.

Provisional Allotment Letter

Only for those applicants who fulfil the eligibility requirements as per JSSU eligibility policy with recommendation by eligibility committee and a pass in English Test, a provisional admission letter will be issued to Foreign Students by the International admission cell and scanned copy of provisional admission letter is sent to the applicant’s Embassy or Consulate in New Delhi, Indian High Commission in applicant’s Home country and a scanned copy of the provisional admission letter is sent to the applicant’s email address. Therefore, applicants are advised to write their email addresses and other details clearly on the application forms. Only after this procedure is completed, the candidate can process the Visa application.

All foreign students should report to the International Admission cell by the date mentioned on provisional admission letter. In case, they fail to report on the date mentioned, the, candidates can request for extension with a formal request sent by email to the office before the reporting date.

Arrival

All foreign Students who secure admission to any course in University should obtain a valid visa and bring all original documents to complete the registration process, without which no admission shall be granted. The visa must be endorsed in the name of JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mysuru. No other endorsement will be acceptable.

  1. Student Visa: Student Visa is required to join Undergraduate Programme, Post- Graduate Programme, Certificate or Diploma Course, and Master of Philosophy Programme.
  2. Research Visa: Research Visa is required to join Ph.D programme

Students staying in India longer than 6 months are required to register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO). The following documents are required for registration

  • Photocopy of the passport and initial visa
  • Four photographs of the applicant
  • Details of residents in India
  • Bona fide certificate from the university/college/institution

Admission Formalities

After completion of Visa formalities, candidate is required to report at International Admission cell within the prescribed date. He/She undergoes following formalities at office:

  1. Student fills the Application form at International Admission cell.
  2. Verification of Valid Visa, Visa endorsement, Passport, Original Education Documents, Medical Insurance by staff.
  3. Student is issued Registration / Admission Fee slip.
  4. Student pays the registration fee at University Finance office.
  5. Reports back to Admission cell with fee receipt.
  6. Course and College/ Department is allotted by the admission cell & admission letter is issued.
  7. Student with admission letter goes to allotted college/department/faculty and finishes all admission formalities of the college/ department.

Medical test

All Foreign students will have to undergo a medical fitness test including HIV test endorsed by a registered medical practitioner before taking final admission.

Medical insurance

It is advised that all Foreign students take a medical insurance policy to meet the expenses of medical treatments (which are not available in the university) during the stay at the university.

Lateral entry/ migration policy (For Pharmacy Courses)

  1. The candidates who fulfil the eligibility conditions shall be given opportunities for professional growth and career improvement, through Lateral entry/Migration into courses of general, technical and professional education.
  2. The Lateral entry/Migration of the candidates shall not be allowed in the first year of a course of study. Depending upon the availability of seats, admission shall be made at appropriate levels
  3. The sanctioned intake of a class of a course can be enhanced up to a limit of 10% to allow Lateral entry/Migration within this limit.

Transfers & Change of Course:

An international student who has been granted admission to a particular course shall not be allowed to change the course. Transfer from one institution to another in India is also not allowed ordinarily. In exceptional cases, the International Students Cell may permit this - based on the availability of the course, eligibility rules and with the permission of the Competent Authority of the University.

Accommodation

The University has separate hostel accommodations for boys and girls with complete wi-fi facilities. These hostel complexes have state of the art facilities. To enable the students to spend quality time in the University each hostel is equipped with a common room, T.V. Room, Table Tennis Room, Reading Room, Internet Room, Indoor Games Room, Gymnasium, Badminton Courts and Basketball Court. Each room in the hostel is provided with an internet connection. In addition to this each hostel has a medical room and a visiting room. All the hostels are supported by the solar system which helps in the supply of hot water during winter. Apart from these, the University may provide separate accommodation to International Students.

JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research has not authorized any agency/ individual/ agent to act on its behalf and/or to charge any fee from prospective students.

Applications/ enquiries received through middlemen/ third party will not be entertained and will be categorically rejected.
