Introduction

Department of Microbiology

Microbiology is the branch of science that deals with the study of microscopic organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and algae. These microorganisms play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and sustaining life. They are involved in processes such as nutrient recycling, disease causation and prevention, food production, and environmental sustainability.

The importance of microbiology spans across healthcare, agriculture, environmental sciences, and industrial biotechnology. It contributes significantly to addressing global challenges including infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food security, and environmental pollution, making it an essential and rapidly evolving field in modern science.

Establishment

The Division of Microbiology was established in the year 2013 under the aegis of the Department of Water & Health, Faculty of Life Sciences, JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mysuru. In recognition of its academic excellence and research contributions, it was elevated to the status of a Department of Microbiology in 2020.

The Department is equipped with modern infrastructure and laboratory facilities, offering B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. programs in Microbiology. It has a team of thirteen experienced faculty members, all recognized as Ph.D. guides under JSS AHER, Mysuru, contributing actively to teaching, research, and mentorship.

Thrust Areas

The Department focuses on key thrust areas that integrate both basic and applied microbiological sciences, particularly in the healthcare and environmental sectors. These areas are designed to promote interdisciplinary research and innovation, enabling students to develop expertise in emerging domains of microbiology.

  • Mycology, Plant Pathology, Epidemiology, and Clinical Microbiology
  • Herbal Drug Technology for gastrointestinal disorders and Cancer Biology
  • Biofilm Development, Probiotics, and Human Microbiome Studies
  • Functional Genomics, Bioinformatics, and microbial characterisation of water sources
  • Mycorrhizal associations, Bioremediation, and environmental microbiology applications

Teaching and Research for Students

The Department emphasizes a vibrant and interactive teaching-learning environment, combining strong theoretical foundations with extensive practical training. Students are guided and mentored to excel in competitive examinations such as UGC-CSIR NET, KSLET, and GATE.

The research-oriented curriculum includes dissertation work that enables students to gain hands-on experience and secure fellowships from funding agencies like ICMR, ICAR, DST, and DBT. The Department also promotes interdisciplinary research collaborations and regularly organizes seminars, workshops, national and international conferences, and internship opportunities.

Scope of Microbiology

Microbiology offers vast career opportunities across diverse sectors including healthcare, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food and dairy industries, environmental management, and water and wastewater treatment. Graduates and postgraduates can pursue careers in clinical diagnostics, research and development, industrial microbiology, and academic institutions.

The program also fosters entrepreneurship and skill development in areas such as biofertilizer production, composting technologies, fermented food production, wine and baking technologies, and organic waste recycling, equipping students to become innovators and contributors to sustainable development.

Microbiology Club and Activities

The Department has an active student-driven Microbiology Club that encourages academic engagement and extracurricular development. The club organizes activities such as paper presentations, scientific discussions, exhibitions, outreach programs, and awareness campaigns.

These initiatives help in nurturing leadership qualities, teamwork, scientific thinking, and communication skills among students, preparing them to excel as competent professionals and responsible members of society.
