Services offered
Department staff and students actively participate in ward rounds along with the medical staffs in ICU, Male Medical Ward, Female Medical Ward, Pediatrics Ward, OBG, Orthopaedic and Surgical Ward. During the ward rounds the case sheets of the patients are being reviewed for assuring patient specific drug therapy. Along with this patient medication interview and wherever necessary proper interventions and recommendations are being made.
Centre for Patient Counselling and Education (CPCE) was initiated to provide the patient counselling services. Patient counselling centre is situated adjacent to the hospital dispensary where the regular counselling for the chronic diseases like diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are given to the out patients. Apart from oral counselling, printed patient information leaflets (PILs) regarding diet, life style management is also being distributed to them.
Drug information services are provided to the health professionals and the general public through our Drug Information Centre (DIC) in GHQH, Ooty and in the department. The feedback of these services is also gathered for further improvement of our services. Poison treatment protocol for the treatment of common poisons used in this area was prepared and issued to the hospital for ready reference which significantly helps in the treatment decisions.
Monitoring of adverse drug reactions is also carried out in the hospital where the staffs and students actively monitor adverse drug reactions and report it to the peripheral centres.
Drug information hand book for the use of health care professionals was prepared by our department according to the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC) essential drug list provided to the Government hospital. The formulary helps the medical team to get easy accessibility to detailed monograph of medicines used in our hospital.
One of the fundamental responsibilities of the Clinical pharmacist is to ensure the appropriateness of medication orders. Hence, daily review of the treatment chart is necessary for achieving good clinical outcome(s). Also, proper treatment chart review serves as a basis for carrying out other clinical pharmacy activities like patient counselling, identifying adverse drug reactions or drug interactions, therapeutic drug monitoring finally ensuring patient safety.
Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) - PharmD students are trained by our clinical and academic preceptors on providing medication reconciliation service to the in-patients of Government Head Quarters Hospital, Ooty.
