WORLD BREAST FEEDING WEEK - 2019
Department of Community Medicine, JSS Medical College observed Breast Feeding Week from 1st August to 7th August 2019. As a part of this occasion awareness Programmemes like health education talks at various places addressing different group of people were organized.
On 2nd August Health talk was delivered by Dr. Shwethashree .N, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, JSS Medical College, Mysuru to women who were pregnant, lactating mothers & elderly nursing women of Halim Nagar in collaboration with UPHC, Bannimantap, Mysuru. The Programmeme was arranged at Halim Nagar Urdu School hall, with the cooperation from Dr. Lokesh, Medical Office of Bannimantap PHC ,Mysuru. Around 86 women with their children had gathered along with ANMs & ASHA workers of UHC Bannimantap. The gist of talk was regarding the importance of exclusive breast feeding, benefits of breastfeeding to mother and child, how mothers can prevent and overcome the complications which can happen during breastfeeding because of improper feeding practice. Role and contribution of everyone in the family & community in successful breastfeeding.The response from the audience was very positive and encouraging. Fruits were distributed for all the participants at the end of the Programme.
On 5th August Health Education session was conducted at JSS Urban Health Centre, Medhar block, by Dr Smitha M C, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, JSS Medical College, Mysuru. Nearly 60 Participants including Antenatal mothers, Anganwadi workers, Asha workers, ANM’s and general public were present during the event. The session started at 2.30 pm. Dr Champakamalini, Medical Officer, JSS Urban Health Centre, initiated the session by introducing the audience to breast feeding practices, following which, Dr Smitha M.C provided information on the importance of breast feeding, its advantages, proper breast feeding practices, maintaining breast feeding while working, disadvantages of pre-lacteal feeds, disadvantages of bottle feeding and formula feeds, importance of colostrum and also the family planning practices to be adopted during lactation. This was followed by an interactive session to allow the audience to clarify their doubts on breast feeding practices, followed by high tea. Overall the health education session met its objective and the participants appreciated the initiative taken by JSS Institution.
On 6th August awareness session on Breastfeeding was held at JSS Women’s Degree College, Saraswatipuram, Mysuru, by Dr Nayanabai Shabadi, Assistant Professor, Dr Aparna, Dr Shabeena and Dr Dhanya,Post graduates in Department of Community Medicine. Around 450 Participants including Degree students of different disciplines like BSc, BA, MSc, BBA, BCA, B.Com, M.Com and Principal of the college, faculty members and NSS Officers of the college. Dr Nayanabai Shabadi provided information to the audience about importance of observation of breastfeeding week and need of knowing importance of breastfeeding even if anybody is not married or not being pregnant or lactating. Dr Nayanabai Shabadi also explained about benefits of breastfeeding to mother and baby, common myths about breastfeeding, importance of colostrum feeding, ill effects of bottle feeding and pre lacteal feeding, time of initiation of feeding by mother after delivery, methods to know adequate feeding of the child, proper method of positioning and latching during breastfeeding and complications during breastfeeding which can happen because of improper feeding. The participants were given the handouts having the information of breastfeeding in Kannada language, which was developed by faculties of Department of Community Medicine. The session was very much interactive. Participants expressed doubts on different practices during breastfeeding which happen in their family or neighbours. All the participants including faculties well appreciated the session and expressed that it was very informative and useful for them and they look forward for such activities regularly by JSS Medical College. High tea was arranged for all the participants after the session.
Breast feeding awareness talk held on 6/08/2019 between 10 to 11.30am.The Programme was organized jointly by PHC Kadakola and Department of Community Medicine.Over 85 participants including pregnant women, their relatives and health workers at PHC Kadakola attended this session. Dr Anil S Bilimale, Dr Jose Jom Thomas, Dr Chandana and Dr Preetha represented the JSS Medical College and delivered the talk.It was an interactive session where the information was provided with pamphlets, banner and PowerPoint Presentation displayed on the screen. The mothers shared their experiences and got oriented towards the uses and methods of breast feeding.At the end of the Programme, the participants received refreshments in the form of fruits, tea and biscuits.
