About Us

Department of General Medicine, the largest of the clinical departments, was established in the year 1984 with a vision to achieve excellence in the patient care and also to develop good quality undergraduate and postgraduate students of international standards. This vision was accomplished by way of simultaneous academic and research training of both the students and faculty continually. Presently apart from its routine responsibility of patient care and students training, faculties and students are regularly involved in original research work including quality publications. Both undergraduates and postgraduate students are guided and given good opportunity for stage presentations at various state and national level forums. This is reflected by good number of best paper awards at various national conferences including best thesis awards. Departmental faculty are regularly involved in global and national clinical trials of various phases and hence contributing for the clinical research of new drug molecules.

Department faculty are fulltime and experienced with good repute and have also organized various regional, state and national conferences. They are regularly involved in delivering lectures at various forums and rewarded with good number of orations. Many of the faculty have been awarded with various fellowship including FAIMER, FICPs and American college of Physicians. They are also members and advisors of various state and national academic statutory bodies like Association of physician of India (API), Cardiological society of India (CSI), ICMR, Research Society for the Study of diabetes in India (RSSDI), Indian medical association (IMA), etc at various cadres.

Department of medicine introduced its quarterly newsletter "CAPSULE"which showcases our faculty and postgraduate students about their academic achievements. This newsletter contains interesting case reports, review articles, details about seminars & conferences organized. It also highlights about non-academic achievements of our postgraduates epically in the field of sports.

Department also started a unique annual state level "PG-MEDICON" since 2012 with a theme of ‘UPDATE AND UPGRADE’ the contents of which are case based teaching, didactic lecture on day to day clinical challenges, CPC by post graduate students and workshops. This gives an opportunity for the faculty and students to refresh and enrich their knowledge about medicine. Also, postgraduates get an exposure to bedside teaching from teachers across the state and of various specialities. Faculty and postgraduate students from various medical colleges across the state have participated in the event and appreciated the same. Another highlight of the program is an eco-friendly concept of handing over ‘SAPPLINGS’ as token of appreciation for the speakers.

Celebration of international health days like world diabetes day, international AIDS day has been carried out since years. On these occasions free health camp and awareness programs will be organised for the benefit of the public at large. Department is also involved in carry out extension activities like free rural health camps, clinical support to patients at peripheral hospitals like Suttur and Chamrajanagar. Other extension activity is at Anti Retro Viral Therapy (ART) centre at JSS Hospital, for patients suspected or diagnosed with HIV infection to registering, distributing drugs including follow up in collaboration with central govt funded NACO wing.

Department of medicine feels proud to start "HOLISTIC GERIATRIC CARE WITH CURRICULUM ENRICHMENT" wing in the year 2014 with an objective of simultaneous comprehensive patient care along with choice based curriculum development for postgraduate students. In future, department is also planning to start Module based clinical reasoning, state-of-the art Diabetic clinic and Adult immunization along with Travel medicine in the forthcoming years.
