The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology which is a constituent of JSS Medical College was established in the year 1984, which strives to foster excellence in undergraduate and post graduate medical curriculum and medical research.
The department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology has been authorized to conduct medicolegal post-mortem examination in unnatural deaths, since 1997.It caters for the jurisdictional limits of nine police stations. Department is actively involved in medicolegal work such as conducting postmortem examination, examination of sexual assault victim and accused, age estimation, providing expert opinion and crime scene examination.
The faculty of the department are guest faculty at Karnataka Police Academy, Police Training School, Karnataka Prison Training Institute, Mysuru where they are involved in training the police officers and probationers of various cadres.
The Departmental Faculty are also involved in teaching Forensic Medicine for Students of JSS Ayurveda medical College and Hospital and Dept of Criminology and Forensic Sciences, University of Mysore. Department conducts Live autopsy demonstration for them and for students of Government Ayurveda Medical College & Hospital, Mysuru. The undergraduate Students are taken to Karnataka Police Academy during guest lectures to sensitize them about police training.
The department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology has been exemplary in inculcating regularity and discipline among students. Students are encouraged by awarding certificate of excellence in attendance and academics at the end of their term.
