Department of Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy
The Department of Dermatology at JSS Hospital aims to serve the people of Mysore and the neighboring districts by offering state-of-the-art facilities for treating diseases related to skin. It offers both primary and tertiary care. The department also aims to excel in areas of teaching and research.
The department is committed to gain and disseminate new knowledge about normal and diseased skin. It caters to outpatients and inpatients and offers skincare services in a caring, compassionate and sensitive manner.
The faculty and clinical associates of the department have expertise in all subspecialties within dermatology, which include: dermatologic surgery, phototherapy, laser and cosmetic surgery, pediatric dermatology, acne, psoriasis, eczematous disorders, infectious diseases of the skin, Leprosy & STD including HIV Patients.
Features
Skin diseases from acne to zoster (A-Z) are treated in our department. Around 40,000 patients avail the services of our department every year as outpatients. The department offers scientifically proven cosmetic treatments in an academic environment. Available procedures include BOTOX, dermal fillers, chemical peels, cautery, RFC and cryotherapy. The Department runs an AIDS cell to provide wholesome care to patients with HIV and AIDS.
Academics
The department has 6 faculty members and 15 residents. Our faculty members have excellent knowledge in diverse techniques and in different research areas. They have published numerous textbooks and peer-reviewed articles and also delivered lectures and presented scientific papers at national and international conferences.
Our residency program provides excellent training to the dermatologists of tomorrow. Our postgraduate teaching programmes, which include weekly seminars, journal clubs, case presentation and short topic symposium, are aimed at making the students proficient in the field of dermatology, venereology and leprosy. Our students are encouraged to attend conferences, CME, Quiz and workshops. The department also regularly conducts CME and hosts conferences of state and zonal levels viz. DERMYS 2004 and DERMAZONE 2010.
Undergraduation
We conduct clinical demonstration classes for 6th term students for one month. Students are trained meticulously in the clinical assessment and diagnosis of common skin diseases, imparting knowledge about relevant investigation and specific treatment. We also demonstrate surgical procedures. Theory classes are conducted for 8th term students using audio visual aids.
The house surgeons posted in our department undergo rigorous training in the diagnosis and management of common skin diseases. They are given opportunity to perform minor surgical procedures.
Community Service
The department acts as a community partner and uses its expertise to provide help to those in need. Our community service includes camps conducted in the surrounding villages. Our doctors regularly visit Suttur PHC and JSS Urban Health Centre to provide clinical care to patients residing in these areas.
Distinctiveness or Uniqueness of the Department
- Comprehensive vitiligo care
- 12 hour phototherapy services including whole body NBUVB, whole body PUVA, hand and foot UVB, hand and foot PUVA, targeted phototherapy and hand-held NBUVB device for focal, acral and generalized types of vitiligo Phototherapy services are also being used for psoriasis, lichen planus, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma etc..
- Counselling for vitiligo patients- Vitiligo has a major impact on quality of life of the patients and is associated with anxiety and depression, hence counselling plays a major role.
- Medical management of vitiligo with various topical and systemic therapies
- All types of vitiligo surgeries including punch grafting, suction blister grafting, keratinocyte melanocyte suspension.
- Patch testing for suspected cases of allergic contact dermatitis using Indian standard series, footwear series as well as hair dye series for confirmation of the offending allergen.
- Contact immunotherapy using different concentrations of Diphencypropropenone(DPCP) in recalcitrant cases of alopecia areata.
