School of Life Sciences Ooty
Division of Biotechnology
This programme aims to train students to appreciate the physico-chemical properties of biomolecules in the organization of life and to learn cutting-edge laboratory research involving biochemical techniques into a broad range of fields in life sciences by emphasizing the molecular mechanisms. Inclusion of molecular biology and nanotechnology imbibes insights on the structural and functional organization in the central dogma of life. In addition, nanotechnology potentially attracts creative modern-day research in managing human health. The aspects of genes and inheritance, role of immune system, methodology in cell and tissue culture, and the vital concepts in nanobiology, nano systems, and cancer biology will be appreciated. These subjects are dealt to enlighten the students to appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of life science research. Post second semester, the students are encouraged to carry out summer research project wherein they can undergo incubation towards scientific thinking orienting themselves for their research in final semester as well for their PhD.
The biochemistry beginning from the synthesis of food all the way to its metabolism in human systems is covered. The role of plant and its organization is appreciated in greater detail. Students will perceive various aspects of assessing human health and management of disease. Along with these, the students also study proteomics, one of the most important upcoming areas of research. The fourth semester exclusively involves project work for students to undertake research in their area of interest under the supervision of guide. In total, the students get a chance to shape his/her career in modern life science research though their biochemical approach.
