The Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology was established in the year 1994 for the first time in the country at JSS College of Pharmacy, Ooty. The department has kept a high standard of education and research in a wide range of biotechnology filed and equip the pharmacy students with adequate theoretical and practical knowledge in field of microbiology, bioprocess technology, animal tissue culture technology, protein and protein formulation, immunotechnology, bioinformatics and computational biotechnology, biological evaluation of drug therapy and other modern molecular biotechnology techniques like cloning, sequencing and hybridoma etc. In addition, the faculty and students of the department makes sincere efforts to apply basic findings to contribute to the prosperity and welfare of human being.
The department offers M. Pharmacy in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, P.G. Diploma in Bioinformatics and Ph.D. program. The department has been successful in maintaining high level research activity which is recognized at both National and International levels. The department is involved in consultancy and extension services to other Universities and Industries through CADRAT and is also a part of Drugs Testing Laboratory (DTL) recognized by Government of Tamil Nadu and Government of India for carrying out microbial testing of Pharmaceutical preparations.
