Research

The Department of Pharmaceutics, established in 1991 has Four M. Pharm specializations viz., Industrial Pharmacy, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance and Pharmaceutical Regulatory Affairs, each having intake of 15 students.

The post graduate program of Pharmaceutics (Industrial Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics) focused on research and coursework related to the formulation development and biopharmaceutical characterization of drug products. The department works towards promoting a team-based approach to develop various drug delivery tools such as nano-carriers, controlled drug delivery systems, transdermal drug delivery system, mucosal drug delivery etc., for managing the life-threatening diseases/disorders includes Alzheimer's disease, various types of cancers, infectious diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, diabetes and its complications etc.

Pharmaceutical Regulatory Affairs and Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance programs focus on qualification and validation of instrument/equipment, validation of pharmaceutical manufacturing, documentation and dossier compilation.

The departmental research activities in various areas would enable further advancement and expansions in patentability/commercialization of developed nano-formulations, temperature and humidity mapping of manufacturing area and training on eCTD compilation. With competent teaching staff and good research outcomes, we are offering various professional add-on courses.

We are extending our expertise and facilities as mentors to other institutions/industries and plan to further strengthen to be recognized as Centre of Excellence in Nanomedicine.

Department of has 17 faculty members (04 Professors, 6 Associate Professors, 3 Assistant Professors and 4 Lecturers) with wide range of academic and research experience.

Since its inception in 1991, the Department of Pharmaceutics has evolved into a multidisciplinary hub that offers four M Pharm specializations Industrial Pharmacy, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance, and Pharmaceutical Regulatory Affairs each admitting 15 students annually. Our research strategy integrates formulation science, advanced analytics, and regulatory intelligence to translate laboratory discoveries into viable therapies and compliant products.

Translational Formulation Science

Graduate programmes in Industrial Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics centre on the design and biopharmaceutical evaluation of novel dosage forms. Current projects span:

  • Smart nano-carriers for targeted delivery of anticancer drugs, anti-infectives, and neuroprotective agents
  • Controlled-release and transdermal systems to improve patient adherence in chronic disorders such as diabetes, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Mucosal and intranasal platforms aimed at rapid CNS access for Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions

Quality & Regulatory Innovation

Our Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance streams emphasise:

  • End-to-end equipment qualification and process validation for cGMP compliance
  • Dossier and eCTD compilation using PharmaReady and other industry-standard tools
  • Environmental temperature-humidity mapping and risk-based Quality-by-Design (QbD) frameworks that feed directly into commercial tech-transfer packages along with gowning practices.

Infrastructure & Expertise

  • Faculty strength: 20 members (4 Professors, 4 Associate Professors, 12 Assistant Professors) with diverse industrial and academic backgrounds
  • Funding portfolio: Rs. 1.6 crore in active DST, DBT, ICMR grants and intramural seed grants
  • Scholarly output (2020-2024): 519 SCI-indexed papers (IF 1.1 - 17.2) and 18 Indian patents (9 granted, 8 published, 1 filed)
  • Facilities: LC-MS/MS, 3-D printer, and an eCTD training suite-collectively enabling bench-to-batch innovation

Future Directions

Leveraging these assets, we mentor peer institutions and industry collaborators, and are positioning the department as a Centre of Excellence in Nanomedicine. Ongoing initiatives target:

  • Commercialisation of lead nano-formulations.
  • Expansion of professional add-on courses in data-driven formulation and regulatory science.
  • Enhanced patenting, licensing, and start-up incubation to propel breakthrough therapies.

With a proven record of high-impact publications, sustained funding, and cutting-edge infrastructure, the Department of Pharmaceutics remains committed to advancing pharmaceutical science and improving global healthb outcomes.

The department has adequate lab facilities including sophisticated instruments are available for carrying out quality research to nurture strong research culture with an emphasis on quality of publications, Ph.D. theses and research projects.
