Division of Microbiology & Tissue Culture
Division of Microbiology was established in 2013 under the aegis of Department of Water & Health, Faculty of Life Sciences, JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mysuru, which was established in 2011. Study of Microbiology offers tremendous avenues and has considerable potential in Applied Sciences. The division offers under-graduation (BSc) and Post-graduation (MSc) in Microbiology with adequate infrastructure and basic amenities to admit the students with a strength of 60 UG (3 years) and 80 PG (2 years) every year.
The division also offers Post Graduate Diploma in Tissue Culture (1 Year) that admits 10 students every year. The division hosts / holds four teaching faculties with rich teaching experience. All the faculties are recognised guides under the JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research.
Currently the 5 research students on Epidemiology, Clinical Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Probiotics and Allelopathy have been registered and is in progress. Along with Quality teaching and abundant research opportunities in health care sector being the prime theme / area of focus. The division focuses and emphasises more towards vibrant teaching, learning & interactive environment between students and faculty. The faculties are specialised in different sectors of Microbiology viz., Mycology, Plant Pathology, Epidemiology, Clinical Microbiology, Herbal Drug Technology for Gastrointestinal Disorders, Biofilm Development, Probiotics, Human Microbiome Studies & Functional Genomics, Microbial Characterisation of Water Sources, Mycorrhizal Association, Bioremediation etc., The mandates of the division are to mentor and channelize students to get well equipped for national / international competitive examinations e.g. UGC-CSIR NET, KSLET, GATE etc., and with the dissertation research experience frame the objectives to target fellowships from different funding agencies viz., ICMR, ICAR, DST, DBT etc., It also encourages interdisciplinary research along with close association with its sister divisions viz., Nutrition & Dietetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Nanoscience & Technology etc., for the best interdisciplinary studies for M.Sc. students. The division remains active in hosting many activities such as research talks, seminars, lecture series and offers consultancy services especially towards the research exposure for undergraduate students of various other colleges.
The faculties of the division are members, life members and are serving as Executive committee members of Association of Microbiologists of India (AMI), Mysore-Chapter and had organised a National Conference with the theme†Biology of Microbes: Evolution along Technology†during 2016. The course is distinctive as it overlaps with various other areas of biology viz., Molecular Biology, Immunology, Nanoscience & Technology etc., The scope is vast as its involvement in different sectors viz., Medicine, Clinical Research, Agriculture, Dairy & Food industry, Water & Waste Water Industry, Biochemistry etc., The course fosters continuous improvement and innovation towards enterpreunership with exceptional emphasis on skill development on Biofertilizers, Compost production Technology, Fermneted Food – Wine preparation technology, baking technology, Recycling Organis wastes, Vermicomposting etc., Post graduates in specific gain prolific research experience through the research project during their fourth semester as a part of curriculum.
