Department of Medical Genetics

Thumb

Department of Medical Genetics is relatively a new department started in 2019 under JSS Medical college. The department offers both undergraduate (BSc) in medical genetics and post-graduate (MSc) in Medical Genetics and Genomics courses. The department is one of its kind to stimulate learning in hospital settings and the only college in Mysuru to offer an undergraduate BSc course in medical genetics. The course is aimed at imparting strong foundational knowledge in genetics and exposing students to the emerging field of genomic medicine.

Vision

To develop an integrated Clinical, Laboratory, and Academic center that provides genomic services to society, focuses on rapid translation of research to services, and offers skill development training programs.

Mission

  • To create a world-class resource in genomic and genetic technology providing testing and counseling services for patients with, or at risk of, inherited disorders.
  • To develop educational, outreach, and community engagement strategies and strive towards providing genomic services to underserved communities.

The department has initiated the screening of newborns for seven disorders (Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, galactosemia, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, congenital hypothyroidism, biotinidase deficiency, phenylketonuria, and cystic fibrosis). The Cytogenetics Laboratory is established with the funds received from the Clinical Development Service Agency (CDSA), JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (JSSAHER), and the Department of Science and Technology – Science and Engineering Research Board (DST-SERB). The department has also entered into collaboration with various institutes like Genomic Medicine Foundation, UK; Sunway University, Malaysia; Centre for Human Genetics (CHG), Bengaluru; Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad.
