The Medical Education Unit (MEU) organized a three-day workshop from 28th to 30th March 2023 at the MEU, 2nd Floor, JSS Medical College for the Senior Residents. The workshop aims to train Senior Residents across all Basic Medical Education Technologies Departments. The workshop is intended to enable them to handle the teaching assignments of the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) Curriculum of MBBS efficiently.
The MEU has identified the final list of Senior Residents attending the workshop. All participants were instructed to attend the three-day workshop. The workshop consisted of 32 Senior Residents from all Departments.
On 28th March 2023, a three-day workshop for senior residents commenced at JSS Medical College. The inaugural session began with the keynote address by Dr.Manjunatha B., Dr.H.Basavana Gowdappa, Principal of the college, highlighted the unique initiative by JSSMC MEU for this workshop for senior residents. Dr.Suma M.N., the Vice Principal, spoke and wished the participants. Dr.Praveen Kulkarni, Vice Principal (para clinical) & Dr.Manthappa M, Vice Principal (Clinical), extended their best wishes for the workshop.
Dr.Arun M., the MEU Coordinator, delivered the welcome speech and explained why this workshop was conducted specifically for senior residents. He emphasized that senior residents are not considered under the NMC MEU training, and this workshop would be a valuable opportunity for them to upgrade their knowledge and skills.
The Member Secretary of the MEU, Dr.Pushpalatha K., delivered the vote of thanks and highlighted the importance of such workshops in enhancing the professional development of the participants. The inaugural session provided an excellent start to the three-day workshop and set the tone for the rest of the event.
The first day of the workshop focused on introducing the revised basic course workshop in medical education technologies. The second and third days covered teaching-learning methods, assessment methods, and curriculum design. The workshop also provides an opportunity for participants to interact with each other and exchange ideas.
Here are the day-wise speakers and topics for each session of the Revised Basic Course Workshop on Medical Educational Technology for Senior Residents:
Day 1: 28/10/2023
The day started with introducing the course, an ice-breaking session, and group dynamics. Dr Praveen and Dr Pushpalata K led the session. The course focused on understanding the principles of adult learning, competency-based medical education, and the goals, roles, and competencies of CBME.
The session continued with learning domains and the learning progression, including a group activity on classifying domains. The morning session ended with a tea/coffee break.
The afternoon session started with objectives writing, developing objectives from competencies, and linking learning and assessment with competencies. The microteaching session was introduced, followed by a lunch break.
The large group session started with blackboard teaching, followed by small group practical teaching. The day ended with a clinical teaching session, followed by a tea/coffee break and a session on lesson plan preparation, including a group activity. Dr Kiran H S and Dr Archana S led the clinical teaching session.
Day 2: 29/10/2023
The day started with a recap of day 1, followed by an introduction to assessment principles. The session continued with theory and practical assessments, including workplace-based assessments. Dr.Deepa Bhat led the practical assessment session.
The afternoon session started with a demonstration of OSPE/OSCE and debriefing, followed by a lunch break. The session resumed with an introduction to AETCOM and feedback. The SDL session was introduced, followed by a session on reflective practice. The day ended with a tea/coffee break. The day ended with debriefing and wrap-up for the day and integration.
Day 3: 30/10/2023
The last day of the course was packed with engaging activities. An educational networking session was organized to encourage participants to interact and exchange ideas. Following this, the participants took part in an open house and a microteaching demonstration. To ensure the effectiveness of the microteaching session, the students and MEU members as moderators assessed the presentations.
Later in the afternoon, the valedictory ceremony commenced at 3:30 PM. Esteemed guests Dr H. Basavanagowdappa, Principal, and the vice principals Dr.Suma M.N. (Pre-clinical), Dr.Praveen Kulkarni (Para-clinical) & Dr.Manthappa M. (Clinical), graced the event with their presence. The ceremony's highlight was the certificate distribution, carried out by the principal and the vice principals.
As the ceremony ended, a group photo session was arranged, capturing the memories of the event. The participants then indulged in a delightful hi-tea, marking the end of an eventful and educational course.
Overall, the course was informative and well-structured. The faculty members were knowledgeable and experienced, and the group activities were engaging and helpful. The course was well-received by the participants, who found it useful in their professional development.
