Periodontology

Periodontology is the specialty of dentistry which encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes; the maintenance of the health, function and esthetics of these structures and tissues; and the replacement of lost teeth and supporting structures by grafting or implantation of natural and synthetic devices and materials.

The department also houses a diabetic care centre where diabetic patients are counseled and a special care is given to them as diabetes and periodontal health are inter-related.

Community Service

Occasions like National Oral Hygiene day, No tobacco day, World diabetes day etc are observed by the department. The department conducts various camps at different occasions to create public awareness about oral health.

Academics

The department of Periodontology was started in the year 1989. The undergraduate courses were started under Mysore University and at present the courses are under JSS AHER. The post graduation course in the department was started in the year 1998 and the current intake of Post Graduates is 4 candidates per year. There are 10 full time teaching faculties in the department who are trained in the various clinical skills. The teachers are also updated with latest teaching methodologies. The department has been constantly conducting many continuing education programs thereby helping students and faculties to be updated in the advances of the subject.

Research

The faculty and students are involved in many research projects and clinical trials with reputed companies. They also have more than 100 publications in both national and international journals.

Gum disease or periodontal disease is one of the commonest causes for tooth loss due to destruction of tooth supporting bone. With timely treatment this can be stopped. For this reason, Dept of Periodontology has a centre dedicated to regenerating lost tooth supporting tissues. Trained staff with latest clinical expertise provide state of the art treatment in dealing with gum disease thereby preventing tooth loss.

The centre has access to advanced technology and latest regenerative materials and is equipped with digital radiography, CBCT, PRF machine and laboratory. Collaboration with Dept of Material Science for development of indigenous bone grafts and membranes assures highest quality materials.

Patients with gum diseases undergo a thorough oral as well as general check-up. Periodontists work along with physicians for advanced treatment of patients with systemic diseases. Minimally invasive procedures are carried out so that patients can resume routine work. The centre is focused on overall wellbeing of the patients.

Oral Hygiene Instructions

  • Brushing and flossing 2 times /day with fluoride tooth paste with gentle pressure
  • Use soft toothbrush and Change every 3months
  • Maintain balanced diet
  • Reduce sugar/carbohydrate rich diet, refined food, carbonated drinks etc.
  • Avoid cigarette, tobacco and alcohol
  • Schedule routine dental check up every 6 months
