Oral Pathology & Microbiology

Oral Pathology & Microbiology is a specialty of dentistry that deals with the understanding of normal histology and anatomy of oral and para oral structures. It also encompasses the identification of diseases affecting head and neck regions using histopathological & laboratory techniques. It also imparts knowledge & skills on Forensic Odontology. The Department of Oral Pathology & Microbiology caters to both undergraduate & post graduate students & patients. It is not only in accordance of all DCI requirements, but has additional facilities too. We have 5 dedicated and well trained staff who are involved in teaching, patient care & research work & also have numerous publications to their credit

The Department was established in the year 1989 (UG) 2012 (PG)

Scope of the Department

To teach and train UG & PG students

  • Teeth anatomy, histology and its identifications.
  • Various pathologies in head and neck region.

To serve the patients

  • Issuing biopsy and cytology reports.
  • Conducting various hematology, urine, serology and biochemical laboratory tests.

Academics

The under graduate teaching programme includes basic knowledge of tooth morphology by carving of teeth in wax along with age estimation of a person based on the patterns of teeth eruption. They will identify and appreciate the basic oral histology by microscopy and appreciate the normal development, morphology, structure & functions of teeth and oral tissues.

The student will also understand the pathological processes of oral diseases, compare and diagnose based on clinical, radiographically and histopathological findings which involves the oral and paraoral structures. Student also studies the common lesions affecting oral tissues through microscopy and will identify and diagnose the disease. They will learn and perform the preparation of ground sections and oral smears.

Post graduate student will be equipped with the knowledge of basic & advanced pathology, microbiology, molecular pathology, anatomy, histology, biochemistry and physiology of oral and paraoral structure, recent advanced laboratory techniques, biostatistics and research methodology. They will learn to identify and appreciate the microscopic slide and writing a report on oral diseases /lesion. They will have knowledge on Basic hematological tests, urine analysis and its clinical significance.

Infrastructure & Learning Resources

The department houses well equipped clinical area, microscopy room, excellent museum, well stocked library, seminar room & spacious practical halls. The Histopathological services offer diagnoses of pathologic conditions by cytological smears, decalcification techniques & biopsy tissue evaluation & reporting. We also cater to all routine blood & urine investigations, few serological & biochemical investigations to aid patient management. The Research microscope room is not only well equipped with routine diagnostic aids such as binocular microscopes, but also has special facilities like research & stereo microscopes that highlights our best practices of telepathology & research support. Both these facilities help in interdepartmental & inter-institutional projects, dissertations, thesis & research works.

Research

The faculty and students are involved in research projects. They also have numerous publications in both national and international journals.
