Tips To Prevent Accidental Poisoning Incidents In Children

Be aware of the risk of accidental poisoning as your child grows
Accidental poisoning is one of the most common childhood injuries, which occur in the home most of the times. Generally, children are not aware of certain things that can hurt them. Often children have the habit of putting the things into their mouth even the one which does not taste good or smell good. A poison emergency proceeds with no warning so it is a good idea to have poison prevention tips and emergency information at home.

What can be poisonous for children?
In addition to pesticides and insecticides the following can be poisonous

  • Medications (Over doses)
  • Poisonous household and personal care products
  • Poisonous plants

Following Are The Poison Prevention Tips To Keep The Children Safe

Medicines (overdoses) :

  • Use child resistant containers or covers for the medicine containers.
  • Keep the medicines in locked cabinets or out of reach of children immediately after use.
  • Never tell children that medicine "tastes like candy".
  • Never take medicine in front of children. They often imitate the act.
  • If  hand bag contain medicines or other items that could harm a child, keep them away from the child’s reach.
  • Give medicine only to the person for whom the doctor has prescribed it for.
  • Do not take or give medicines in the dark.
  • Read the instructions prior to use of medications.
  • Clean out medicine cabinet regularly and dispose of the expired medications.

Poisonous household and personal care products:

  • Keep all the poisonous household products in a place where children cannot see or reach them.
  • Use child-resistant packaging. Replace the caps tightly after use.
  • Store poisonous household products in a different place from food and medicine.
  • Read labels to learn if a product is poisonous and for first aid information.
  • Keep products in original containers. Never put them into food or beverage containers.
  • Keep all sprays, powders, cosmetics, mouthwashes out of reach of children.
  • Keep all poisonous household cleaning products (Eg. Dish washers, bleaches, soaps and detergents) in original safety top containers or out of reach of children or in a locked area.
  • Store kerosene, petrol in labeled containers in locked area or out of reach of children.
  • Store insect spray and weed killers (Eg.rat poisons, cockroach killers) in locked area.
  • Store paints and paint products in locked area.
  • Do not allow the child alone when a poisonous product is within reach (Eg. If the phone or doorbell rings, take the child with you).

Plants:

  • Know the names of all plants at home/surrounding and which ones are poisonous.
  • Keep all plants out of the reach of small children.
  • Inform your children not to put any part of plants in to their mouts.
