Total credits for the program: 168 credits (For BSc Honors/Honors with research)
208 credits (For the integrated MSc program)
The program offered during the first 2 semesters (1 and 2) includes basic and introductory courses in biology including medical subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, etc. Students will also be trained in computer applications and psychology.
The basic courses taught in the first 2 semesters are meant to train students to develop their understanding and interest in advanced subjects for the next 8 semesters (3-10). This includes Genetics, Developmental and Cell biology, Molecular biology, Cancer genetics, etc. In addition, students will take allied subjects starting from semester 2 and elective subjects from semester 5 onwards. These allied and elective subjects are application-oriented and specifically designed to enhance their skills and in-depth understanding of the subject.
The final year semester (9 and 10) is completely devoted to a master's thesis by research along with an industry internship.
Students who have passed the Pre-University Examination conducted by the Pre- University Education Board in Karnataka or any other examination considered equivalent to that shall be eligible for admission to the program. The student should have studied life sciences/biology as a subject at the qualifying examination (PU).
To be an excellent teacher and researcher and expose the younger generation of students to the field of Molecular Biology and Genetics and have a focused group working on the same. I strongly thrive for getting funded projects and believe in advancing myself through quality research outputs
I am a graduate of the University of Mysore and completed my post-graduation in Biochemistry at Manipal University. I started my career with Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Nepal, and worked there for about a year before joining JSS Medical College in 2007 as Assistant Professor. I have been awarded Postgraduate Diploma in Genomic Medicine and Health Care in 2018 from the University of South Wales, and Ph.D. in 2018 from the JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research. Currently, I am working as a Professor and Head of the Department of Biochemistry, JSS Medical College, Mysore.
I have played a vital role in availing the Department of Science and Technology – Funds for Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure in Universities (DST-FIST) award to the department of Biochemistry in 2012 for a period of 5 years with a grant amount of Rs. 80 lakhs. I have been successful in obtaining funds from Government agencies like ICMR, Vision Group on Science & Technology (VGST), and DST. My thrust areas of research include Molecular Biology & Genetics of rare disorders. I am is currently working on a multicentric project “National Registry for Rare and other Inherited Disorders”. I have been awarded the prestigious Prof. Y.T.Thathachari Endowment Prize for the Best Research Scholar at the Graduates Ceremony 2015 at JSS Medical College, an appreciation award for the research activities carried out in the year 2019 by the Research Division, JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Women achiever award 2021 by JSS Medical College on the occasion of Women’s Day, Best teacher award 2022 apart from the best oral and poster presentation awards in the National and State conferences. I have organized 08 National hands-on workshops in Molecular Methods in disease Management, have trained 150 delegates to date, and have also been invited as resource faculty by various institutes.
I have established and developed the Department of Medical Genetics at JSS Medical College which has facilities for newborn screening for treatable metabolic disorders, maternal serum screening for the detection of aneuploidy & chromosomal disorders, and clinical cytogenetics having facilities for Karyotyping & Fluorescent in-situ hybridization. I have initiated BSc Medical Genetics and MSc Medical Genetics and Genomics program for which the syllabus has been designed according to Choose Based Credit System (CBCS). I head the Special Interest Group on Human Genomics and Rare Disorders (SIG-HGRD) comprising like-minded people with a passion for the field of genomics. I have articles published in indexed high-impact journals with an average impact factor of 19.202 and an H-index of 19. I am guiding 8 Ph.D. scholars on various research topics.
