M. Pharm Pharmaceutical Chemistry is a two years course. In the first year students learn about fundamental chemistry subjects such as Advanced medicinal chemistry, Advanced organic chemistry, Instrumental methods of analysis, Chemistry of natural products, Advanced spectral analysis, Computer aided drug design, Organic synthesis and Process chemistry. Apart from theory there will be practical’s to demonstrate the theoretical process at the advanced levels. The students will take up assignments and seminars on advanced topics that they study in theory and practical classes. In the second year, its purely the research work. To supplement the research work they will be thought research methodology and biostatics. Workshop will be conducted on “Nuances in Research Ecosystems” to help the young students to start their research career at basic and advanced levels. The students participate in journal clubs and they too prepare and present papers from peer reviewed journals. There will be periodic assessment of research in the form of progress presentations. At the end there will be final presentation and viva voce. Apart from curricular, the importance will be given for extra curricular activities for participation in seminars, conferences, workshops and training programs at the national and international levels. In addition to all, there will training for campus interviews and placements by the training and placement cell where students will be trained on communication skills, personality development and leadership skills.
The course material is organized in a systematic way to train students for careers in academia and the pharmaceutical industry. Furthermore, the initiative encourages students to seek higher education and study opportunities. The syllabus was updated with the aid of academic and industry experts to reflect recent trends in the field of pharmacy and to address the needs of pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, and regulatory bodies.
Skill development in pharmaceutical chemistry: A medicinal chemist must have three essential qualities: ingenuity, hard work, and perseverance. Pharmaceutical chemists / medicinal chemists, as core participants in the drug development phase in pharmaceutical companies (R&D) or API generic companies, must have excellent written and interpersonal communication abilities, which are extremely useful when working with scientists from other disciplines. Chemists are inspired by the fact that their work aims to improve human health and relieve misery.
Pharmaceutical chemistry is an evergreen field that connects many scientific fields and encourages researchers from other disciplines to participate in the development of new medicines, such as biologists, toxicologists, pharmacologists, theoretical chemists, microbiologists, and bio-pharmacists. One can place himself/herself in a competitive position by having a strong background in organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and medicinal chemistry.
A brief outline of the courses taught under this program is given below:
Semester IV will be exclusively the project work. The student can carry out either in college or will be deputed to Pharmaceutical Industry.
