Diploma in Tissue Culture (ODL)
The discipline “TISSUE CULTURE” a novel concept of culturing totipotent single cells and developing the plants that is challenging to the environmental habitat including to the dominating pathogens that cause diseases. Gottlieb Haberlandt, the father of plant tissue culture, established this unique process that involves the cultivation of embryo and culturing of vegetative cells in vitro and acclimatizing in vivo. Tissue culture has at most priority in the fields of Plant Breeding, Plant Propagation and Plant Biotechnology. It has become one of the most reliable and dependent technology among the plant science study. Inclusive of Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering this branch of science can revolutionize the existing system. This branch has been exploited and explored in different contexts viz., Industrial, Commercial production of saplings and Research and development etc.,
On the other hand, cell culture technique enables to understand the structure and functions of cells which is programmed by Genetic Engineering tools and techniques for the production of vaccines, interferon, clinical substances viz., growth hormones, monoclonal antibody production, stem cells etc.,
In the current scenario tissue cultured plantlets are on demand in the country. It is estimated that around 200 crores of turnover in the domestic market is proving its potency with 20% annual growth. There are more than 70 commercial tissue culture units established in the country. This field of science is also supported by Department of Biotechnology (DBT) in various research institutions and Universities for improving the protocols that can be extralopated to the different fields viz., State Agriculture Department, Agri ExportZones (AEZs), Spice Board, Sugar industry, Paper industry, Medicinal plant industry and StateForest Departments etc.,

Career Prospects
This field is another candidate in the pool of scientific horizon that creates ample avenues for undergraduate and postgraduate students in both the field of research and placements in research and developments and also in biotechnology based companies.
- The students will be technically and critically trained with good practical exposure to perform both the plant and animal culture, which is the at most required in this field of science, skilled candidates are absorbed in well established and commercial tissue culture units.
- This area can be taken up as micropropagation businesswith smaller investment by entrepreneurs.
- Many Central and State Government departments to name a few: TheDepartment of Agriculture and Cooperation, National Horticulture Board (NHB) underthe Ministry ofAgriculture, Agricultural and Processed food products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry etc., are promoting by providing various schemes and subsidies along with incentives to strengthen this stupendous decipline.

Dr. Sumana K, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology and Tissue Culture, Faculty of Life Sciences, JSS AHER, Mysuru pursued her doctoral degree from University of Mysuru, Mysuru in 2012 and secured seventh Rank in Master of Arts in English from Karnataka State Open University in 2014. Her area of specialisation are Mycology and Plant Pathology. Currently research progress has taken turn with the previous research experience towards Clinical Microbiology and Food Microbiology. She started her career as Lecturer in Microbiology (2002-11) at JSS College for Women, Saraswathipuram, Mysuru and as Assistant Professor in Microbiology at JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science(2011-15), Mysuru and currently, serving as Assistant Professor at Division of Microbiology, JSS AHER, Mysuru, handling both UG and PG Microbiology students, She has served as PG Coordinator for the Department of Water and Health, Faculty of Life Sciences (2017- 21). Till date she has guided 20 MSc and 04 PG Diploma Dissertation students. She is also guiding two research students that fetches PhD degree. Her research team have secured prizes for Best oral (03) and a poster presentation at different National and International Conferences & Symposim. She emphasises more towards the interested area of research the student would like to get expertised with involving specialists in that specific area as a part of the research team.
She is also involved in various academic boards and organisations VIZ., BOS (Board of Studies) and BOE (Board of Exams) Member, Dept. of Microbiology, at JSS College for Women, Saraswathipram (2006-2009) ; Member BOS(2016-2017), (Nominated by Academic Council Team), & Member, BOE (2017-19) at Dept. of Biotechnology, JSS College for Women, Saraswathipram ; Member BOS (2019-21) Maharani's Science College for Women, Mysuru (Alumni member); Member, BOS (2019-20) SBRR Mahajan First Grade College, Mysuru; Member, BOS (2019-22), Departmet of Biotechnology, St. Philomena;s College, Mysuru; Member, BOE (2020-21) at Departmet of Microbiology, St. Philomena;s College, Mysuru.
She is a Life member for Association of Microbiologists of India and served as Joint Secretary and Secretary at Association of Microbiologists of India, Mysuru Chapter, Mysuru, 2014-15 and 2016-17 respectively. AMI-MC Executive committee member till date. She has participated and presented in the conferences (14), Seminars (15) and Workshops (18). She has publications in peer reviewed national and international journals (25). 03 Books and 03 Book Chapters. As a part of research activity she has undergone research training at Faculty of Technology, Kohn Kaen University, Thailand (Sept 1 st to October 31st, 2016).
She has been awarded with 'Best Microbiologist' by Karnataka Excellence Awards, VPCEM Trust, Bangalore, Karnataka held at Ravindra Kalakshetra Bangalore. Dated 6th November 2021
