M.Sc Environmental Science course of open distance learning (ODL) mode in JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (JSSAHER) have important learning outcomes and measurable learning Objectives. M.Sc Environmental Science course provides students with an understanding of key concepts in Environmental Science using a problem based approach in a series of seminars, field, and practical trainings, which enable the students to apply the concepts in freshwater, marine and atmospheric environments. Key skills training in the research process, a fundamental calculation for environmental science, and finding and using sources is included in this module. Today best practice procedures in environmental management are rapidly becoming international rather than national. JSS School of distance learning programme looks to provide in depth learning in environmental education, which will serve as a focus for research into local, regional and global environmental issues, management and policies in response to the urgent and increasingly complex challenges of the new century.
This course is designed to provide foundation knowledge of environmental issues and problem-solving strategies at national as well as at global level. A student who successfully completes this course should be able to demonstrate the following:
With increasing public concern about the environment, worlds of possibilities are available for graduates in terms of employment and research opportunities. Coupled with the growth of the global economy, the need for competent graduates with knowledge in Environmental Science is tremendous in the international arena as well. Careers in Environmental Science are so varied it is difficult to consider them as one category. Graduates of this programme can gain employment with consulting firms, research bodies, government and non-government organizations as Environmental consultant, Environmental education officer, Environmental manager, Nature conservation officer, Recycling officer, Sustainability consultant, Waste management officer, Water quality scientist. As private companies and industries are emphasizing more on the science of sustainability, they are looking for a wide range of professionals to manage the process related to environment.
This course is intended for professional’s practitioners, researchers and students from wide range of backgrounds who aim to develop their knowledge and insights pertaining to the environment. The course in designed to provide critical and practical skills to analyze, evaluate, design and implement solution and strategies with regards to water and health issues. The prudent management of our precious water resources, environment conservation, and sustainable development are high on the agenda of global concerns. Addressing these challenges requires professionals with a high degree of specialization and interdisciplinary approach. In order to develop improved systems and practices to preserve the most precious resource of our planet, there are a great demand fort rained people. In view of the huge focus and investment made by all nations on the water sector, there is a tremendous need for specially trained manpower for supporting the institution involved in the development and management of water, at both the grass roots levels and at the institutional level. Applying knowledge gained through environmental science is the only way to solve these problems so that the environment can be preserved. The rapid urbanization of the environment needs to be studied constantly in order to avoid altering and damaging the environment significantly. Ultimately, environmental science is necessary to save the environment from destruction and all of its dependents from extinction.
In IVth semester, students undergo exclusively research and industrial training by experienced researchers and professionals.
Any graduate in science (B.Sc/B.FSc/B.Sc in Agri./B.Sc in Geography/B.Sc in Horticulture/BE or B.Tech in Civil & Environmental Engineering/MBBS/BDS/B.Pharm) from any recognized institution/University and industrial professionals one who working as Environmental consultant, Environmental education officer, Environmental manager, Nature conservation officer, Recycling officer, Sustainability consultant, Waste management officer, Water quality scientist, etc with science degree.

Dr. Shivaraju H.P has special knowledge in preparation and characterization of catalytic nanomaterials for sustainable environmental applications (Photoelectrocatalysis/electrocatalysis) such as removal/treatment of emerging pollutants in water and air, energy production and antimicrobial activity, CO2 reduction into useful compounds, intensification of methan yield in biomethanation (photo-electrochemicl reduction), etc. He has well experienced in the comprehensive study on evidence of accumulation of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), including persisting organic pollutants (POPs), pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) and trace metals in environment. Development of novel water/wastewater reclamation techniques (Photoelectrocatalysis/electrocatalysis AOP, self sustaining hybrid processes, multi-functional membrenes, point-of-use advance filters, etc), Alternative energy research (Electrochemical conversion of CO2 into CH4/value added organic compounds, Electrocatalysis interfaced Hybrid Biomethanation, Biochemical Electrocatalysis [Microbial fuel-cell]), Integrated water resource management (water quality monitoring, technological frameworks for catchment management, pollution remediation techniques (self-sustaining) by utilization of solar-energy, Conceptual models with integration of Citizen Science (participatory), and monitoring (GIS-RS) approaches), and Fate, transportation & remediation of CECs are his special interests in research. He has developed sustainable technologies for remediation and treatment of POPs, PPCPs, trace metals, industrial dyes, hazard organics, pathogens etc in environment (water & air) using alternative and renewable energy sources and technology transformation for the social benefit. He has synthesized various advanced photocatalytic nanomaterials like doped metal oxides, nanocomposites, polymer blends, hybrid co-catalyst systems, and supporting catalytic materials under different synthetic methods like hydrothermal, salvothermal and sol-gel techniques. The nanoarchitecture and in-situ modification strategies for all of these nanomaterials were optimized for ideal catalytic applications by exploring efficient synthetic routes and potential modifiers. He has successfully demonstrated efficient treatment/removal methods for the hazardous pollutants and pathogens in water and wastewater by employing those catalytic nanomaterials. He has successfully developed solar-light responsible metal-oxide based nanocomposites for sustainable utilization of the natural sunlight as a major energy source for environmental remediation applications. He has prepared various nanostructures and nanocomposites such as TiO2/FeO3, CeO2/TiO2, ZnO/Al2O3/SiO2, PU/TiO2, etc for applications of sustainable renewable energy production processes such as biogas production, hydrogen production and solar light harvesting. He is actively involved in designing and eco-friendly synthetic novel routes for advance nanoparticles using bio-solvents, surfactants and conditioner as an effective capping and properties controlling agents.
