
On the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day 2026, the Department of Psychiatry, JSS Medical College, JSSAHER , Mysuru, in collaboration with the Department of General Surgery, organized an awareness and educational programme on 10 September 2026 at the Seminar Hall, Department of General Surgery, JSS Hospital, Mysuru. CHIEF GUESTS were Dr. Madhu C P – Director, JSS Hospital, Mysuru and Dr. Narayanappa D – Principal, JSS Medical College, Mysuru. *Opening Remarks* was by Dr. M Kishor Professor & Head, Department of Psychiatry, JSSMC & Hospital *Opening Remarks* by Dr. Anil Kumar M S Professor & Head, Department of Surgery, JSSMC & Hospital. The programme aimed to create awareness regarding suicide prevention and to highlight the importance of recognizing and managing stress among medical professionals and postgraduate trainees. Dr. Kishor Professor & Head, Department of Psychiatry, delivered a talk on Suicide Prevention, focusing on awareness about suicide, identification of warning signs and risk factors, early recognition of individuals at risk, and the importance of timely intervention and appropriate professional support. This was followed by a session on Stress Management by Dr. Akshatha C J, Senior Resident, Department of Psychiatry. The session focused on common sources of stress encountered by medical professionals, particularly postgraduate residents, the impact of prolonged stress on physical and mental well-being, and practical strategies for effective stress management. Emphasis was placed on healthy coping strategies, work-life balance, peer support, early help-seeking, and building resilience in demanding clinical settings. The programme was attended by postgraduate students from many the Department of General Surgery as well as other departments, interns, and faculty members. The sessions provided an opportunity to sensitize participants to the importance of mental well-being within the medical profession and the collective responsibility of creating a supportive environment for individuals experiencing psychological distress. The programme concluded by reinforcing the message that suicide is preventable and that timely recognition, open communication, appropriate support, and professional intervention can save lives.
