Oral Cancer Awareness Programme

An Oral Cancer Awareness Programme was conducted on 29 April 2026 at the JSS Urban Health Centre, Bamboo Bazar, Mysuru. The programme was jointly organized by the Department of Pharmacy Practice, JSS College of Pharmacy, and the Department of Community Medicine, JSS Medical College, Mysuru.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Madhu B, Professor and Head, Department of Community Medicine, JSS Medical College. The programme featured expert talks by Dr. Kiran P K, Associate Professor, Medical Oncology, JSS Hospital; Dr. Meenakshi S, Associate Professor, Department of Prosthodontics, JSS Dental College & Hospital; and Dr. Vidya, Professor and Head, Department of Oral Pathology, JSS Dental College & Hospital.

The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. Rama H V, Lady Medical Officer, JSS Urban Health Centre, who emphasized the importance of early detection in reducing oral cancer morbidity and mortality.

Dr. Kiran P K discussed the major risk factors for oral cancer, particularly tobacco use and HPV infection. He highlighted precancerous lesions such as leukoplakia and explained diagnostic methods including biopsy, CT, and MRI. He also outlined the treatment facilities available at JSS Hospital, including de-addiction services.

Dr. Vidya elaborated on the burden of oral cancer in society, along with its risk factors and preventive strategies. She stressed the importance of maintaining oral hygiene and advised regular dental check-ups every six months. Early warning signs, including lymph node swelling, were also discussed.

Dr. Meenakshi S focused on the geriatric population, addressing nutritional deficiencies and their clinical manifestations. She highlighted the importance of dentures, rehabilitation, and speech therapy in improving the quality of life of oral cancer patients. Dr. Madhu B reinforced the importance of early screening and regular check-ups, particularly utilizing the services available at the JSS Urban Health Training Centre.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. B R Jaidev Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacy

The programme was organized by Dr. Rama H V, Lady Medical Officer, JSS Urban Health Centre, along with Dr. B R Jaidev Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice.

The programme was attended by postgraduate students from the Department of Community Medicine, staff members, and members of the local community. The session was interactive and well-received by the participants.
