Oral Health Awareness Program for Special Children on the Occasion of World Health Day

In observance of World Health Day, the Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, JSS Dental College and Hospital, Mysuru, organized oral health awareness and screening programs on April 7, 2026, focusing on specially abled children

The first program was conducted for children from Aashiana – Institute for Special Children and Sahara Special School, in association with Special Olympics Bharat. The initiative aimed to promote awareness about overall health, with special emphasis on oral hygiene, and to educate children and caregivers on maintaining good oral health practices

The program was led by Dr. B. Nandlal and Dr. Chanchala, along with Dr. Shambhavi, Dr. Disha, and Mr. Mahendra. Dr. B. Nandlal addressed the gathering, highlighting the importance of oral health and its impact on overall well-being. He demonstrated proper brushing techniques and emphasized the role of structured education in improving oral hygiene practices among children

Dr. Chanchala spoke on the importance of a balanced diet for maintaining oral health and demonstrated brushing techniques tailored for children with autism, incorporating sensory-friendly approaches. She also informed parents about the Special Smile Clinic at JSS Hospital, conducted every Thursday for specially abled children

Dr. Disha and Dr. Shambhavi educated participants on the appropriate use of toothpaste and demonstrated positioning techniques to assist children during brushing

An oral health screening of 48 children was conducted, and those requiring further care were referred to JSS Dental College and Hospital. Both children and caregivers were educated on maintaining good oral hygiene practices

The team expressed gratitude to Ms. Massuma, President of Aashiana, and Mr. Rafeeq Ahmed Khan, President of Sahara School, for their support in organizing the program

On the same day, a Dental Awareness and Screening Camp was conducted at Matru Mandali Shishu Vikas Kendra School, Mysuru, under the leadership of Dr. B. Nandlal. The team included Dr. Prachi, Dr. Khadeeja, and Mr. Mahendra, Dental Hygienist

The camp focused on special children, with active participation from parents, in association with Special Olympics Karnataka Branch. The program was graced by Smt. Veena Prasad, President and Trustee Member; Mr. Vaniprasad H.A., Secretary; and Mr. Pandu B.V., Administrator of the institution.

The session emphasized the importance of preventive dental care, awareness of oral hygiene practices, and early identification of dental issues. Demonstrations of proper brushing techniques were conducted using models and audio-visual aids, with special emphasis on modified methods suitable for children with special needs and the role of parental assistance

A free dental screening was conducted for all children, and those requiring further treatment were referred to JSS Dental College and Hospital

Both programs were successful in promoting oral health awareness and providing preventive dental care to special children. The active participation of parents and the dedicated efforts of the dental team contributed significantly to the success of these initiatives
