NSS unit of JSS Medical College, JSS AHER had organized an annual special camp from 2nd to 7th March 2026 at various villages coming under Kurihundi Gramapanchayiti (Kanenooru, Tharaganahalli, Kurihundi, JP hundi). Free health screening and treatment camp was conducted as part of the NSS annual special camp. The camp was organized and supported by JSS Medical College, under the JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Mysuru. All our activities are guided, directed, and supported by the principal Dr. Narayanappa D, and vice-principal Dr Suma N.M, JSS Medical College, Mysuru and Mr. Satish Chandra. Chief Administrative Officer, JSS Medical College, Mysuru and Dr K L Krishna, NSS Coordinator, JSSAHER, Mysuru. Miss Nirmala Panchayat development Officer (PDO), Kurihundi Gramapanchayiti, Mysuru district and Dr Pranav, Dentist, was instrumental in obtaining the permission, planning, and executing the arrangements, giving publicity of camp, and providing the place for conducting the camp. During her inaugural remarks she reiterated the importance of medical camp especially in the rural areas at their door step and insisted the public to make right use of this unique opportunity. Decisions and support of PDO was unconditionally supported by all members and other office bearers of the village. The inaugural function was done under the presence of Dr Dakshayini, Principal, JSSDCH, Mr Satish Chandra, AO, JSSMC, Mis Nirmala, PDO, Kurihundi Gramapanchayiti, Mr Srikantegowda, Head Master, Govt Higher Primary School, Kanenooru, Mr Shivappa, member of the village in the school premises of Govt Higher Primary School, Kanenooru, on the 1st day of camp. Welcome address was done by Dr Thippeswamy, NSS PO, JSSDCH and vote of thanks was done by Dr Manu G, NSS PO, JSSMC. Miss. Vyshnavi, Mr. Urjaswa (Phase III Part I MBBS) Miss. Punya, Miss. Kavana, Miss Padmini (Phase III Part II MBBS) were designated as student co-ordinators who successfully and systematically organized the camp by joining hands with the NSS officers, doctors, and other students. The medical health camp team involved Services offered by specialists from various departments including general medicine, obstetrician & gynaecologist, and paediatrics from JSS Hospital and Research Centre, Mysuru. and MBBS students of JSS Medical College, Mysuru. There were different counters, like Registration, screening complaints, recording the blood pressure (BP), testing random blood glucose levels (Blood Sugar), checking Height, Weight, and BMI, one pharmacy counter was set up to dispense free medicine for all the patients who were prescribed medication by the concerned doctors. All these student volunteers catered their services at different medical counters and finally delivered prescribed medications through the pharmacy counter. Around 752 patients including the public and students from schools and Anganwadi benefited from the services offered during the free medical camp series; it mainly included many children, women, and the old-age population. Blood sugar (CBG) was tested in 303 patients, and free drugs were distributed to 700 patients. Along with this, the students took the initiative to spread awareness about important issues like nutrition and its values, social hygiene, personal hygiene, the Right to Education, Child labour, Child marriage, and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. A small group of students went door to door, covering most of the houses of the village to create awareness and impart knowledge to the families educating them through posters, flyers, and slogans. Students discussed with the villagers how to break various superstitions and stereotypes. Students divided themselves into 2 groups to talk to the students of both the primary and high schools. They went to various classrooms and had interactive sessions with the children to enhance their understanding of these topics. The children in the schools were presented with posters and slogans that allowed them to comprehend the topic at their individual levels. The teachers appreciated the JSS students spreading awareness as the children can better relate to someone closer to their age than an authority figure. The residents of the village and school students were extremely receptive to the information being given to them. Our all activities were supported by the members and PDO of Kurihundi Gramapanchayiti. Our activities involved residents. Her whole hearted support by all means stood as a strong base for overall work execution we are very much thankful for her support and involvement. All these adjuvant services along with the patient registration counter were effectively managed by 50 NSS volunteer medical students from Phase III part I and part II MBBS, in two slots each of 25, who were actively, responsibly, meticulously, and tirelessly involved in assisting these counters for all 7 days throughout the conduct of the camp. Overall, the camp turned out to be a fruitful learning experience for all the volunteers. It helped the medical students contribute their little part towards the objective of 'making health care a demand, rather than a need', as rightly said by our respected AO Mr Satish Chandra. This special rural medical camp activities were conducted under the supervision of NSS Programme Officer Dr. Manu G, NSS Assistant Programme Officers Mr Manjunath and Mr Venkatesh from JSS Medical College, Mysuru, who co-ordinated the whole event.
