National CME on Unleashing Potential: Global Career Opportunities for Pharmacology Postgraduates

Introduction: The CME aimed to provide insights into the diverse career opportunities available for pharmacology postgraduates beyond academia, particularly in the global pharmaceutical industry. Schedule of Events: The day commenced with registration and breakfast from 8:30 am to 9:30 am, allowing participants to gather and refresh before the sessions began. Dr. Satish A.M, Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology, JSSMC, Mysuru, delivered the introductory speech from 9:30 am to 9:45 am, setting the stage for the day's discussions. Introductory speech highlighted the importance of medical pharmacologist in healthcare setup who are back ground players with a vital role in drug development, maintaining its safety and efficacy and have a key role in translation of information from bench to bedside. Dr. Jayasheel B G, Head of Regulatory Affairs, Alcon Laboratories (India) Private Limited, Bengaluru, conducted a scientific session on 'Regulatory Affairs: Drug Development from Regulatory Perspective' from 9:45 am to 10:45 am. He discussed about various career opportunities and role of pharmacology postgraduates in regulatory affairs, structure of regulatory authorities and important regulations in all the levels central as well as state wise. The inauguration ceremony took place from 10:45 am to 11:15 am, with Chief Guest Dr. Jayasheel B G, presided by Dr. Praveen Kulkarni, Vice Principal (Para Clinical), and S R Satish Chandra, Administrative Officer, JSSMC. Mr. Jestin V Thomas, Managing Director & CEO of Leads Clinical Research & Bio-Services Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, conducted a session on 'BA-BE Studies' from 11:30 am to 12:10 pm. He discussed the importance of conducting BA-BE studies and future prospects for MD Pharmacology postgraduates as Investigators. He also discussed about various roles and responsibilities in the BA-BE setup. Also, he added the potential job roles for M. Sc medical pharmacology postgraduates i.e., ranging from QC, QR, research associate etc. A detailed and informative session on Medical Affairs & Global Drug Development was delivered by Dr. Manjunath R., Senior Global Medical Manager at Novo Nordisk, Copenhagen, Denmark, on 'Opportunities to Go Abroad' from 12:10 pm to 1:00 pm. He explained various functions in pharmaceutical industry and highlighted the importance of medical pharmacologist as voice of patients in pharmaceutical industry there by acting as bridge between industry, clinicians and patients . Dr. Poornima R., Team Lead at Indigene, Bangalore, gave a talk on 'Scientific Writing & Device Technology: PSUR, CSR, CER for Regulatory Submission & Pharmacovigilance Opportunities' from 2:00 pm to 2:40 pm. She has explained the various types of medical writing ranging through different stages of drug development (e.g., CSR, CER, DSUR, PSUR, PBRER, PADER etc.) Dr. Ashwini. V, Associate Medical Director at Astrazeneca, Bangalore, gave a sneak peek on 'Career Opportunities in Pharma and Allied Industries for Indian Pharmacologists' from 2:40 pm to 3:20 pm. She explained the various job labels for medical pharmacologist in drug development. Also, she discussed the opportunities and limitations of working in Global MNC, Indian MNC and CROs. Final Session by Dr. Purushotham Naidu, Senior Global Program Safety Lead at Novartis, New Jersey, United States, gave bird’s view on 'Medical Affairs & Global Drug Development: Unleashing Potential' from 3:20 pm to 4:00 pm. He discussed about various job roles in Pharmacovigilance i.e., ICSRs, Aggregate Reporting, Signal management and Risk-Benefit Analysis. Also, also highlighted the importance of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Healthcare Setup and its impact on job opportunities in pharmaceutical industries. The CME was concluded with a valedictory session from 4:00 pm to 4:15 pm, followed by high tea, allowing participants to reflect on the day's learnings. The National CME on 'Unleashing Potential: Global Career Opportunities for Pharmacology Postgraduates' provided valuable insights into the diverse career paths available in the pharmaceutical industry globally. Through informative sessions and expert speakers, participants gained knowledge about regulatory affairs, medical affairs, research and development, and opportunities for global career advancement. The event was well-received by attendees which was reflected by the positive feedback motivating the organisers to indulge in future endeavours.
