National Forensic Medicine Day & World Schizophrenia Day

To commemorate National Forensic Medicine Day held on May 12th and World Schizophrenia Day on May 24th, an awareness program was held on Friday, May 24, 2024, from 3 to 4 PM at Medical Education Unit, JSS Medical College, Mysuru. The program focused on the interface of Forensic Medicine and Psychiatry in cases related to schizophrenia. The event was graced by Dr.H.Basavana Gowdappa, Principal of JSS Medical College, Mysuru, who was the Chief Guest. The programme was presided over by Dr.Manjunatha B., Registrar, JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research. The opening remarks were delivered by Dr.Chandrakanth H.V., Professor and Head, Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, JSS Medical College Mysuru, - Dr.Kishor M, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry, JSS Medical College and Hospital, Mysuru, Dr.Praveen Kulkarni, Vice Principal (Para-clinical) JSS Medical College, Dr.Manjunath G.V., Deputy Director , JSS Hospital , Dr.Arun M., Professor, Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology were the dignitaries who graced the occasion. Key Topics and Speakers 1. Biological Basis of Delusions and Hallucinations in Schizophrenia- Dr.Murali M.R. 2. Forensic Aspects in Crime Associated with Severe Mental Illness- Dr.Smitha Rani Dr.Murali M.R., Senior Resident, Department of Psychiatry discussed the underlying biological mechanisms that contribute to delusions and hallucinations in patients with schizophrenia, highlighting recent research and advances in understanding these phenomena. Dr.Smitha Rani, Associate Professor, Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology addressed the forensic implications of crimes committed by individuals with severe mental illnesses, focusing on the challenges and considerations in such cases. The event provided an in-depth look at the intersection of Forensic Medicine and Psychiatry, particularly in the context of schizophrenia. The speakers shed light on both the biological underpinnings of the disorder and the forensic challenges associated with it. The awareness program was well-received by attendees, fostering greater understanding and collaboration between the fields of forensic medicine and psychiatry. Dr.Atma Bevin and Dr.Saravana Prashanth, postgraduates in the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, served as the Masters of Ceremony. Dr.Sai Niveditha, also a postgraduate in the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, delivered the vote of thanks.
