One day SPARC research conclave on Tracking transport and fate of emerging contaminants

Department of Pharmaceutics, JSS College of Pharmacy, hosted a one-day research conclave on “Tracking Transport and Fate of Emerging Contaminants” on 21.12.2023. Several renowned researchers and clinical practitioners graced the occasion and discussed the future of research on the topic of health and plastics through both online and offline modes. Dr. S.P. Dhanabal, Principal, JSS College of Pharmacy, Ooty acted as the convener; Dr. K. Gowthamarajan, Professor & Head, Department of Pharmaceutics, along with Dr. Thava Palanisami, Associate Professor, Environmental Plastic Innovation Cluster, University of Newcastle acted as the organizing secretaries for the event.Dr. K. Gowthamarajan delivered the genesis of the conclave and briefed us about the SPARC project.Dr. Rima Dada, Professor, Dept of Anatomy. AIIMS, New Delhi shared her perspective of plastics with their complications and burden on endocrine and reproductive systems and proposed collaborative works in that respective field. Dr. Karuppasamy PK, Asst. Professor, Presidency College, Chennai, shared his knowledge on plastics' impact on deep-sea life, fishes, and other sea creatures and how that impacts our environment and human health.Dr. Selvakumar, Professor, PSGIAS, shared his expertise on nanomaterials and how we can move forward with the strategies of nano to combat nano.Dr. Salom Gnana Thanga Vincent, Professor and head of the of Environmental Science, shared her exciting work on marine and seashore research and plastics, along with coral and sea fish works, and proposed collaborations with JSSCPO. Dr. Arjun Singh, Scientist, ICAR, Haryana, shared the effects of plastics on agriculture and how they can end up in the human system through online mode. Ms. P.K Selvi, Additional Director, Central Pollution Control Board, Bangalore, pointed out the need of the hour for plastic research and said how she could help us in collecting the samples in the future and finding a way forward. Dr. Thava Palanisami spoke in detail about the need for the studies, how we can expand, interdisciplinary collaboration and student exchange ideas, challenges ahead like plastic determination in body fluids, and other possible collaborations.Dr. Balasubramanian, former research dean of JSSAHER, coordinated the event and managed the brainstorming sessions. In the end, everyone showed interest in the formation of a joint center of excellence under JSSAHER and proposed various collaborations for high-impact publications and solutions for the betterment of the next generation. With a vote of thanks by Dr. Thava Palanisami, the session was closed and certificates were handed over to each of the expert members and delegates.
