The Department of Microbiology hosted a two day workshop on 19th and 20th of December 2023 for the officials of Ethiopian Food and Drug authority (EFDA). Dr. Tejashree A. Professor and Head, welcomed the officials and introduced them to the various testing modalities available for diagnosis in the department of Microbiology at JSS Hospital. Dr. Ranjitha explained the specimen collection requirements and highlighted the ICMR guidelines for Covid 19 testing. The officials were taken into the level 3 biosafety cabinet zone and were demonstrated the nucleic acid extraction and PCR in addition to PPE donning and doffing. The PCR results were shown and the guideline based reporting was emphasised. Dr. Sowmya G.S briefed the principles of ELISA technique and demonstrated the ELISA for leptospira antibody detection. The officials were keenly observant about the procedural steps. Dr. Vidya took over the next session and educated them regarding the compact automated immunoassay system i.e, mini VIDAS ELFA technique and its usage for detection of procalcitonin levels and its importance in management of sepsis. Also, the principle and working of Abott and Vitros CLIA instruments pertaining to the diagnosis of HIV and Hepatitis were demonstrated along with rapid immuochromatographic tests for Malaraia and HIV. Overall the program was well appreciated by the officials.
