DST PURSE supported a 5-day workshop on “Anticancer Agents: Screening to Signaling Mechanisms” conducted by the Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology and Regenerative Medicine, Department of Biochemistry, JSS Medical College, JSS AHER from 20th to 24th November 2023. The workshop had 18 participants from various institutions like Karnataka University, University of Mysore, IOB-Bangalore, and in-house participants from the School of Life Sciences, JSS Medical College, and JSS Dental College. The workshop aimed at providing hands-on training on phytochemical Extraction methods and their Analysis by LC-HRMS, screening of phytochemical extracts using mammalian cell culture methods; isolation and quantification of proteins from cultured cells, followed by detection of a specific protein by SDS-PAGE and western blotting, cell cycle analysis by Flow Cytometry and Detection of Apoptosis by Confocal imaging. In addition, Senior professors and industrial experts delivered the talks which covered right from phytochemical extraction procedures to characterization using LC-MS and screening using the In vitro model – cell culture and mechanistic studies- Western blotting. Prior to the workshop, a pre-assessment test was conducted where the scores ranged from 12-40 out of 60. After the completion of the workshop, a post-assessment test was conducted to assess the knowledge transfer. The scores of the post-test ranged from 40-60 out of 60. The test scores are testimony to the successful conduct of the workshop, which may be attributed to expert lectures by our faculty members and research scholars who actively demonstrated various techniques. The workshop has helped the participants to acquire necessary experimental skills in the field of natural products purification and characterization and assisted them to move forward with their research in this area.
