NSS Unit JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysuru organized NSS Tribal Village Camp on 6th October 2023 as part of NSS Day Celebration. The NSS Volunteers from JSS Medical College, JSS Dental College, JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysuru, JSS School of Life Sciences, and Department of Health System Management Studies conducted series of activities at tribal Community School “ASHRAMA VASATHI SHALE” Govt. school, Nerale Kuppe, Hunsur Taluk, Mysuru District from 10:30 am to 4.30pm. The event was attended by the officials of JSS AHER including Dr T.M Pramod Kumar Principal & Dean JSS College of Pharmacy, Dr K.L. Krishna NSS officer JSS AHER, other NSS programme officers of various NSS college units under JSS AHER participated. Other officers and school teaching and nonteaching faculty were part of the event. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Pramod Kumar TM who addressed the gathering. Ms. Prabha Urs, tribal welfare officer addressed the students by underscoring the importance of tribal welfare. At the end of the inaugural ceremony, the gathering was addressed by Ms. Girija, a woman from the tribal community and caretaker of the school, who spoke in Kannada and sang a song about the dangers of deforestation Our Core activities are 1) Awareness program on Nutritional Values to the tribal School Children as well as tribe. 2) Exhibition of Various Millets for the benefit of school children as well as local tribes. 3) Display of various charts on nutritional values of vegetables, fruits and millets 4) Free Health checkup, treatment and distribution of free medications for local tribals and school children’s. 5) Distribution of Sports Materials for the School Children’s and Play with Them. Later health check-up was conducted on the volunteers who came forward to undergo the basic health check-up. Students checked their Blood Pressure, Blood Glucose levels, and BMI and they were offered an oral checkup by the dental team from JSS college of dental sciences. Later the students were addressed by Dr Ravisha, the WHO surveillance officer of the tribal region. They sensitized about various government schemes that these children fall under. They encouraged the volunteers thorough brainstorming ideas and come up with new initiatives to help and spread awareness about health and its awareness among the tribal population in the area. At the end of the event, volunteers split into two groups, one group associated with the school children, and the other group with the elders and the management staff. The students of JSS Medical College, found it to be a very useful learning and inspiring experience. They met a lot of new people from diverse cultural backgrounds. After lunch, Students distributed some sports equipment to the kids; like Cricket bats, Volleyball, Football, Badminton Rackets, Carrom boards, Chess Boards, and a few other games. The day ended with our visit to tribal houses in their ‘Hamlets’. The pure and beautiful environment they live free from pollution, and noise disturbances. Students took a nature walk and interacted with some tribal people. Joy, interest, activeness and amusement among the school children towards learning was so impressive and the whole programme witnessed most effective tribal outreach activity.
