Statistical Methods and Research Techniques using SPSS (SMART 8.0)

Workshop on STATISTICAL METHODS AND RESEARCH TECHNIQUES- using SPSS was conducted by the Department of Community Medicine, JSS Medical College, Mysuru from 5th to 7th June 2023 between 9.00 am to 5.00 pm at Medical Education Unit, JSS Medical College, Mysuru. Participants were from various disciplines of Health and Allied Sciences (Medical, Dental, Pharmacy and Ph D Scholars of various subjects).

Day one of the workshop started with Welcome by Mr. Arun Gopi, Lecturer, Department of Community Medicine, JSS Medical College, Mysuru and an ice breaking session with self-introduction of the offline as well as the online participants. Dr Amoghashree, Assistant Professor, Dept of Community medicine delivered a session on the topic “Introduction to research Methodology”. This was followed by deliberation on the topic, selection of research topic by Dr Sunil Kumar D, Professor and HOD, Dept. of Community Medicine. Dr Rashmi S, Senior Resident, Dept. of Community Medicine described on how to search and evaluate the existing literature. The three-day workshop was officially inaugurated at 11.00AM by Dr H Basavana Gowdappa, Principal, JSS Medical College in the esteemed presence of Dr Suma MN, Vice Principal, Dr Praveen Kulkarni, Vice Principal, Shri, Satish Chandra, Administrative Officer, Dr Sunil Kumar D, HoD, Dept of Community Medicine and Mr Arun Gopi, Coordinator, SMART-8.0. Dr Kavya G Upadhyaya, Senior resident, Dept of Community Medicine deliberated on how to frame research question and objectives after the inauguration. Dr Praveen Kulkarni, Professor, Dept. of Community Medicine took a session on how to identify appropriate study design in epidemiological research. This session was followed by a group activity on identifying study designs. Dr Mythily MR, Senior Resident, Dept of Community Medicine described the methodology of clinical trials and practical aspects of conducting clinical trials. Post lunch session began with introduction to descriptive statistics by Mr Arun Gopi, lecturer in biostatistics, JSS Medical College. This was followed by an elaborate session on designing and validating a questionnaire by Dr Sunita Singh, Senior Resident, Dept of Community Medicine, JSS Medical College, Mysuru. Later a detailed session was taken on sampling technique by Dr Shwethashree M, Assistant Professor of Community Medicine.

Day 2 started with brief recap of day 1 sessions by workshop online participant Dr Nethra. Following this, Dr Swetha NK, Senior resident elaborated on basics of hypothesis testing. Mr Arun Gopi deliberated on “Sample Size estimation” with suitable examples and scenarios followed by a group activity. Post Tea session began with deliberation on “Inferential Statistics” by Dr Praveen Kulkarni. This was followed by an elaborate session on correlation and regression by Mr Arun Gopi. There were three group activities and hands on activity on interdiction to SPSS software and descriptive statistical analysis conducted on day two by all the Facilitators, Post Graduates and PhD Scholars of Community Medicine Department to make the topics better understandable to the participants.

Day three began with recap of day 2 by the workshop participants. Dr Praveen Kulkarni, Professor, Dept of Community Medicine delivered session on Systematic review and Meta analysis. All participants were then trained in Hands on SPSS by all the facilitators, Post graduate students and PhD Scholars of the Community Medicine Department. Sessions on Validity of Screening test and ROC Curve and, Survival analysis were done by Dr Smitha MC, Associate Professor and Dr Sunitha Singh respectively. Post Lunch session was continued by Dr Nayanabai Shabadi on “Introduction to Qualitative research. Later Dr Shivaprakash, Associate Professor, Dept of Anatomy delivered a session on “Ethical Considerations on research” followed by an elaborate session on Publication of Research work by Dr Madhu B, Professor, Dept of Community medicine. This was followed by an open house session where all facilitators and participants interacted.

This was followed by the valedictory which was chaired by Dr Sunil Kumar D, Professor and Head, Dept. of Community Medicine and Dr Praveen Kulkarni, Professor, Department of Community Medicine, and Dr Madhu B, Professor, Dept. of Community Medicine JSS Medical College. Feedback was obtained by the participants and Dr Madhu B addressed the delegates and advised them to use the techniques of statistical analysis on the regular basis. This was followed by distribution of Certificates to the delegates and resource persons with grand vote of thanks from Mr Arun Gopi.
