Awareness Program on Nutrition and Oral Health - SIG Dental Cariology

This Awareness program on Nutrition and Oral Health was conducted on 12th June 2023 at JSS Balajagath School, Agrahara. Team members: Ms. Syeda Farha S (PhD), Assistant Professor, and Dr Veena B M, Assistant Professor Ms. Haniya Tasmia and Ms. Yashaswini, 2nd year MSc students, Dept of Nutrition and Dietetics, JSS AHER conducted an awareness program for school children for Nutrition and Oral health hygiene, where children were educated about healthy eating habits and its impact on the overall oral health. General balanced diet rich in carbohydrate’s, proteins, milk and milk products ,vegetables and fruits and fat were brought to the knowledge of the children. Team Members from JSS Dental College and Hospital, Dr B Nandlal, Prof and Head Dept of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry and Group Leader of SIG Dental Cariology, JSSA HER, Mr Mahendra, Dental Hygienist and School oral health Trained Educator. Dr B Nandlal conveyed the large unmet burden to the number of dentists , few dental specialists for children to treat the large number of children in this region who have dental conditions like tooth decay and gum conditions. Hence it was necessary to prevent the dental condition and maintain good oral health by appropriate dietary habits practices. The frequency of meals and frequency of anything sweet and teeth friendly diet were stressed. Also the correct way of circular method of brushing and practicing oral hygiene was demonstrated. Besides this the gargling after every meal and drinking adequate water after anything sweet was recommended as good practices to reduce the harmful effect on the teeth. Further Dr B Nandlal advised that school authorities should advice parents to discourage to carry sweet containing snacks like cream biscuits, cakes and jam etc. in school snacks boxes of children as they due to its retentive nature on teeth may cause more chances for dental decay. The program ended with a interactive discussion with children to report to the JSS Dental college and Hospital for further advice and care through the Pediatric dentists.
