The Department of Medical Genetics and the Department of Biochemistry, JSS Medical College and Hospital, JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mysuru organized a pre-conference workshop on “Basic and advanced techniques in pharmacogenomics” on 22-02-2023 as a part of IPSCON organized by JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysuru. Twenty-four delegates from various medical and pharmacy colleges participated in this workshop. After the inaugural session at Pharmacy college, participants left for the Dept. of Medical Genetics, JSS hospital for the workshop. The workshop consisted of lectures as well as hands-on sessions on different techniques which are generally used in pharmacogenomics.

A pre-workshop test was conducted before the start of the sessions. The workshop began with a lecture by Dr. Vinay Kumar Rao, Assistant Professor, Department of Medical Genetics, JSS Medical College, who gave a broad introduction to pharmacogenomics. Following this, another lecture by Mr. Prince Jacob, Assistant Professor, Department of Medical Genetics, on DNA extraction methods. The delegates had their first hands-on session on “DNA isolation using Himedia kit” demonstrated by Mr. Siddharth, Ms. Vaibhavi, and Dr. Surajj. Post-lunch hands-on session on DNA quantification by Nanodrop technology given by Dr. Surajj and Ms. Vaibhavi. Following this hands-on session on DNA “Quality assessment by Agarose gel electrophoresis” was given by Mr. Siddarth. A practical session was demonstrated on “Polymerase chain reaction setup”, by Mr. Siddarth and Ms. Anju. After a short break, Dr. Arshia Angural, Assistant Professor, Department of Medical Genetics, gave a lecture on the “Role of Sequencing Technologies in Pharmacogenomics”. Following this, the final practical session of “Gel electrophoresis of the PCR amplicons and data interpretation” was performed.

After various lectures and hands-on sessions in pharmacogenomics, a post-workshop test was given to the delegates. The workshop concluded with a photo session, distribution of participation certificates, and the best performer award was given to the top scorer in the pre and post-workshop tests conducted.
