Workshop On Scientific Writing By Dr. Karl Krupp from University of Arizona

Thumb

Scientific writing is not just writing about science; it is the technical writing that scientists do to communicate their research to others. There are four primary types of academic writing: critical, analytical, persuasive, and descriptive. These writing styles differ in their linguistic characteristics and intended audience. Regardless of the genre, however, all scientific writing aims to present information or concepts in such a way that a reader can assess the accuracy of the findings and conclusions based solely on the information provided. School of public health, JSS Medical College conducted a workshop with Dr Karl Krupp on the topic of effective scientific writing on 04/08/2022. Dr Karl Krupp is an assistant professor in the Division of Public Health Practice and Translational Research at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona, Phoenix. He received his M.Sc at the London School of Hygiene And Tropical Medicine, and a PhD in Public Health from Florida International University in Miami, USA. He has extensive experience in grant writing and scientific writing. He consults and provides support to agencies and organizations in technical writing. Fourth semester MPH student Dr Thammali Ramapani gave the opening remarks. Dr Anil S. Bilimale (Chief MPH coordinator) and Dr Manasa (Assistant Professor, School Of Public Health) officially welcomed the guests, Dr Karl Krupp, Dr Poornima Madhivanan, and Dr Ragini. Dr Karl Krupp described about the outline of the scientific research paper and the contents in each section. The significance of journal selection and interaction with editors was emphasized. Following this, six groups were formed. Each group consisted of three senior batch MPH students who had completed their abstracts and six junior batch MPH students. The importance of the abstract and its contents was discussed. The importance of the opening statement in the introduction, the scientific ways of presenting results and the interpretation was emphasized. Akanksha Karande delivered the vote of thanks.
