The Department of Microbiology organized an invited talk on “Significance and Prospects in Microbiology” for First-year postgraduate students as a part of the orientation program on 28th October 2020. The welcome address was given by Dr. Ashwini. P, Co-ordinator, Department of Microbiology, greeted the students and introduced the speaker Dr. S Shishupala and the faculties of the department. Dr. S Shishupala addressed the students first with a scientific frame of mind, scientific temperament, and the importance of microbes and microbiology in the field of science, such as medicine, agriculture, environment, and industry. He then discussed few classic examples related to diseases caused by microorganisms to humans, plants, and animals. The bioluminescence by bacteria, algae, and fungi was also discussed. He enhanced the knowledge of students by discussing the scope of microbiology in different research areas and opportunities in microbiology (research, industry, & teaching). The students were enlightened with the various career paths, research opportunities, and preparations for various competitive examinations. Dr. Ashwini. P concluded the talk by thanking the guest and briefed the students about the curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities and various institutional practices followed in the campus (including Anti-ragging cell, Grievance redressal cell, anti-harassment committee). Dr. Sumana K, PG Co-ordinator, instructed the students about the PG curriculum and Choice Based Credit System pattern. .
