Frequently Asked Questions

Student FAQ's

Quick answers to the questions students ask most about the Integrated M.Sc. regulations.

5 years (10 semesters), requiring 196 credits. You get up to 10 years (double the duration) to finish if needed.

Yes — JSS GIFT offers Multiple Exit points under NEP 2020: a Certificate, Diploma, B.Sc., or B.Sc.-Honors along the way, based on credits completed. See the diagram below.

Yes, if you hold a qualifying Diploma or degree — you can enter at Year 2, 3, 4, or 5 depending on your prior qualification (Multi-Entry option).

A minimum of 75% is required per course. Up to 10% shortage can be condoned for valid reasons (illness, sports, placements, etc.) with proper documentation.

Falling short of attendance or scoring below 50% in Formative Assessment puts you into an 'R' (Repeat) grade; scoring below 40% in Summative Assessment puts you into an 'I' (Incomplete) grade. Both repeater and regular must be cleared by re-registering or reappearing, respectively.

You need at least 50% in Formative Assessment and 40% in Summative Assessment, with a combined Total Score of 50 or more (some relaxation exists down to 47% under specific conditions) to secure a passing grade.

Yes — supplementary examinations are held once every summer semester, and 'I'-grade courses can also be cleared alongside regular semester-end exams.

Based on your CGPA: 8.0+ is First Class with Distinction, 6.5–7.99 is First Class, 6.0–6.49 is Second Class, and 5.0–5.99 is Pass Class.

Yes - a Voluntary 'Drop'/Sabbatical Semester lets you pause for a semester (up to two, for internships/start-ups/research etc.), within the overall 10-year limit, and resume later.

Complete all prescribed courses, earn the qualifying credits, clear all dues, and have no pending disciplinary action — then the degree is conferred at convocation.

Multiple Exit & Multiple Entry (NEP 2020)

As per NEP 2020, the 5-year Integrated M.Sc. is built like a staircase — you can step off with a qualification at several points, or step on partway through if you already hold a Diploma or degree.

■ Undergraduate stage (exit-eligible)  ■ Postgraduate (M.Sc.) stage   ↓ Exit points    ↑ Entry points

Note: A post-B.Sc. candidate joining directly for the M.Sc. needs 76 credits over 2 years. A candidate re-entering after a voluntary exit still has to finish within the overall 10-year (12-year for M.Sc.-Honors) limit.

Roughly 1 hour/week of lectures, or 2 hours/week of tutorials or practicals, equals 1 credit. Expected self-learning (SL) time is on top of this.

Formative Assessment (ongoing coursework — group and individual) counts for 70%, and the Summative Assessment (semester-end exam) counts for 30%.

Up to 24 credits per semester at the bachelor's stage (20 at the master's stage), including any Repeat or Add-on credits.

An extra 10 credits in courses like Constitution of India, Environmental Studies, Universal Human Values, and Life Skills. These are mandatory, but don't count toward your main degree credits. These courses have to be successfully completed, else a student has to repeat the course.

A bridge program before your first regular semester (6-8 credits, only formative assessment, no exam) that builds up your math and communication skills before the main curriculum starts.

Stream electives, open electives, industry-interface electives, common electives across streams, MOOC-based electives, and Add-on minor/major electives.

Yes — by earning additional credits (e.g., 12 extra with B.Sc., 20 extra with B.Sc.-Honors) you can add an Add-on Certification, Diploma, Minor, or Major alongside your main degree.

Yes, subject to approval — the Credit Equivalence and Credit Transfer Committee reviews your transcripts and prior coursework to decide the equivalent credits.

An optional track during semesters 6-8 of B.Sc. Honors for research-inclined students, where 12 of the 20 Add-on credits are earned through focused research instead of regular Add-on courses.

Yes — within 15 days of the result being announced, you can opt to withdraw a low-grade or 'I'-grade course, choosing either R (Repeat) or I (Incomplete) status.

After finishing the regular 5-year Integrated M.Sc. (or 2 years of M.Sc. for post-B.Sc. candidates), you can opt for 2 extra semesters and complete 32 additional credits to be awarded an M.Sc.-Honors degree (equivalent to M.S./M.Tech./M.E.). Candidates who already hold a 4-year degree can also enter directly into this 2-year, 4-semester M.Sc.-Honors track.

You must re-register for it — in the summer semester or the next time it's regularly offered. Core courses have to be repeated as the same course, but for an elective, you may choose a different elective instead.
