The prevalence of dental Fluorosis among the people of Mysuru district accounts to 60% of the population and is seen in both mild and severe forms. In its severe forms, dental fluorosis causes highly disfiguring brown and black staining of the teeth, which can cause chronic embarrassment and social anxiety for the impacted child/individual. The panel from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) warned that severe dental fluorosis would place an individual at risk of psychological problems due to the “loss of self-esteem” and impairment in “self-image” from having disfigured teeth. Subsequent research has found that children with severe fluorosis are often teased in school for having “dirty” teeth and are often reluctant to smile or show their teeth. Thus considering the seriousness of the issue, team SIG (Special Interest Group) Dental Cariology comprising of Dr B Nandlal, Prof; Dr Raghavendra Shanbhog, Dr Paras Mull, Dr Pratibha S, and Dr Chanchala HP (co-ordinator)organized a Seminar and Demonstration Titled “ management of Dental Fluorosis – Micro abrasion, Bleaching and Direct Composite Veneering”.

The program was inaugurated by Dr Balasubramanian S, Dean and Director Research, JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research. Renowned International Guest Speaker, Dr Chris Chen, Professional consultant Ultradent, Taiwan highlighted the simple inexpensive and minimally invasive technology using micro abrasion, bleaching and composite restoration to treat the dental fluorosis effectively to look acceptable and near normal aesthetic appearance of the teeth compared to the expensive conventional ceramic crowns. This facility can now be availed at the JSS Dental College and Hospital, JSSAHER, Mysore.

The programwas attendedby about 60 Delegates and invitees from different Dental colleges in and around Mysore District including the private practitioners.
