Workshop on First Aid for JSS School Teachers

Department of Community Medicine, JSS Medical College, Mysuru organized one day First aid workshop on 20th of September 2019 for teachers of JSS Schools & Colleges under the banner of JSS Mahavidyapeeta. 35 teachers participated in this event. Dr. Manjunath G V, Vice Principal, JSS Medical College, Dr M R Narayana Murthy, Professor & Head, Department of Community Medicine, JSS Medical College, inaugurated the programme by watering the Plant and where in “FIRST AID MANUAL” in Kannada was released. Dr.G.V.Manjunath, Vice Principal addressed the teachers regarding importance of first aid and the reason for conducting the workshop & Dr. M.R.Narayana Murthy highlighted the significance of first aid and first step to be taken for emergency preparedness. The session began with introduction & guidelines in First aid by Dr Sunil Kumar D, Associate Professor, followed by Management of wounds, burns & drowning was explained by Dr.Shwethashree M, Assistant Professor. Providing emergency medical aid for excessive bleeding and shock was explained by Dr Smitha M C, Assistant Professor. Dr Shibani, PG student of first semester MPH, School of Public Health, JSS Medical College gave an introduction regarding the Dental injuries. Dr. Sujana Theja, Asst Prof, Dept of Orthopedics gave brief introduction regarding the physical examination, do’s and don’ts including the management of the joint injuries like fractures, dislocations, sprains, strains etc., Dr Anil Bilimale, Assistant Professor and the MPH co-ordinator, School of Public Health, JSS Medical College described the introduction and emergency medical treatment for drowning and choking. Dr Praveen Kulkarni, Associate Professor illustrated about the first aid in animal bites mainly emphasizing dog bite related First aid. Dr Nayana Shabadi, Assistant professor explained about snake bite injuries and its treatment. Post Lunch sessions included a talk by Dr Shivanand Manohar, Asst Prof, Dept of Psychiatry about epilepsy and its first aid during epileptic attack and that was followed by Briefing & Hands on exercise on : Basic Life Support (BLS)” by Dr.Akkamahadevi, Dr Hemalatha, and Dr.Archana K N, Professors , Department of Anesthesiology, JSS Medical College & Hospital. Each participant was made to demonstrate BLS techniques on mannequins. This was followed by the valedictory which was chaired by Sri. Sathishchandra, Administrative Officer, JSS Medical College, Dr.M.R.Narayana Murthy, Dr.Akkamahadevi, Dr Hemalatha & Dr. Archana K N, and Certificates were distributed to the participants & resource persons. All the participants were provided with “FIRST AID KITS” along with the manual to their respective schools as an aid to implement first aid when required. Mr Sathish Chandra, Administrative Officer, JSSMC, addressed that in the western countries like U.S, U.K, the first aid techniques are given a lot of importance while India hasn’t reached that level yet. He also pointed out the importance of 3 P’s of first aid i.e, Preserve life – stop the person from dying, Prevent further injury – stop the person from being injured even more, Promote- recovery. The Vote of thanks to conclude the program was conducted by Dr Anil Bilimale for thanking every single hand who supported for the success of the first aid workshop 2019. Overall programme was a grand success.
