Cannabinoids

Thumb

Dr. Amruthesh C. Shivachar started with general introduction on cannabinoids(CBs) including its long time use to fight stress, pain and discomfort in India and china elsewhere. It got introduced in western world by early 1900 and its use was banned in the US since 1960s because of its potential for abuse. Synthetic cannabinoids with higher potency are currently being abused as designer (spice) drugs. He even spoke about the therapeutic potential of CBs in multiple sclerosis, neuroinflammatory disease such as stroke, AIDS , amyotrophic sclerosis and projected them as emerging new therapeutics for the treatment of pain and inflammatory disease .He went on to discuss the different types of CB receptors like CB1 and CB2 and other CB like receptors. He also mentioned on I) brain CBR (CB1R and CB2R)-detection in astroglia – performed by inhibition of forskolin stimulated cAMP assays and western blotting responses suggest that signal of CB1R > CB2R in astrocytes .II) Role in astroglial glutamate homeostasis and III) role of CBs in inflammation and pain-CB1R affects pain while CB2R affects neuroinflammatory response in brain.
