Best practices – Smart Campus Initiatives at JSS College of Pharmacy Ooty: Impact on Environment and Society

A smart campus is achievable by incorporating sustainability to building structures, renewable resources, digitalization and bringing together every component of the institute- stake holders, faculty and external members to comprehend the need of a sustainable and environment friendly campus. A Smart Campus paves way for adapting to the needs of its people and place, revealing the prospective of technology and achieving world-class learning and research environment. Our institution- JSS College of Pharmacy, Ooty (JSSCPO) under the guidance of JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Mysuru and JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru undertook Smart Campus Initiatives for the benefit of staff-students and local community.

The JSS College of Pharmacy, Ooty (JSSCPO) is a constituent college of JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mysuru, is dedicated to excellence in Pharmacy Education, Research, Training and Practice. Whilst, the existing infrastructure endorse our institution as a conducive place for academic learning which provides a quality education in a clean, safe and comfortable environment, since the inception, JSSCPO has been working very active in establishing the state of the art, SMART campus.

The motto of “SWACHH CAMPUS SWASTH SHIKSHA” is strongly implemented in every goal sets and activities of the institution.

CHALLENGES

The biggest challenge faced was to constitute a program management committee to monitor and sustain the best practices on and off the Campus. To achieve our goals, a committee for smart campus initiatives was constituted to undertake the responsibility of proposing and implementing them. The students and staffs were motivated to participate actively in the different goal sets pertaining to the environment and sustainability. The Institution’s Drug and Poison Information Center renders the service to the need and necessity of the health care sector of the country. The NSS team of JSSCPO was also constituted as the work force of the institution for the conduct of local awareness programs and other institutional social responsibilities. With this strong empowerment of the committee, the ideologies put forth were:

  • Efficient ICT enabled Learning system for the students
  • Go-green Initiative in campus: Paper-free management system for both academic and administrative activities.
  • Empowering the community: Health awareness and Environmental protection.

RESOLUTION

Our University-JSS AHER, Mysuru and Management- JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru supports us both logistically and financially to achieve the goals of a smart campus. The initiatives were carried out in different facets by the teams responsible:

  • Embedding smart technology into daily life of the campus- carried out by the stake holders.
  • Maintaining “Eco friendly institution” through best practices.
  • Educate students and community on the importance of sustainability for a smart future – NSS team.

INITIATIVES

‘Smart’ Campus at the Institution: The college has taken the initiatives of making the campus SMART with the facilities like

  • ICT enabled class rooms; Digital Boards
  • Learning management systems (1.JSS U Online 2. E-learn);
  • Video Conferencing facility for webinars and virtual meetings;
  • Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) for Library;
  • Pharm Academics online assessment software for Pharm.D students.
  • Energy saving measures in campus

Drug and poison information service centre (DIC) provides all type of drug information in the form of android app and can be accessed by anyone globally. Awarded with Best Poison and Drug Information Centre

Public Awareness and Social Responsibility:

  • The World Pharmacist day was celebrated every year on 25th September. The staff and students create public awareness with respect to Pharmacy as a profession and health & wellbeing of society.
  • International Yoga Day on 26th July
  • The NSS Activities on environment conservation every year.

As an initiation of Smart Campus at JSSCPO, the key elements have been identified. As of now, several pilot projects have begun. Discussions and feedback from stake holders are in progress which would add significant values towards the goal. In order to achieve the targets, staffs and students are being highlighted on the concept of sustainability and green campus. In parallel, discussions with resource persons are also held. Apart from focusing on technology, smart campuses are inevitable to restore environment and resources and help the student communities for a smart and sustainable future. We at JSSCPO are working towards being one of best ‘Clean and Smart Campus’ in the country.
