Prof. KA Raveesha, Dean of Life Sciences, convened the event. Dr. Gopichandran heaped praise on the services rendered by JSS Mahavidyapeetha and emphasised that the world needs such religious institutions, which serve the needy through quality education. He further mentioned that such a topic “Science & Spirituality” is perfectly chosen at the right time when the National Education Policy which is being implemented vigorously throughout the country. The NEP speaks about holistic, value-based education for life and not just for a mere living. He said the educational institutions should look into the Article 51Ah of the Constitution of India, which is the most important unifying element that speaks of Scientific Temper. It has to be practised as a duty by educational institutions, whereby we align with the Constitution of India. Interestingly, no other countries in the world except India has asked its citizens to follow scientific temper in its constitution. Dr. Gopichandran explained how science and spirituality are interconnected and intertwined. The word science is derived from the word “Scientia” which means knowledge or pursuit of knowledge. The first sign of practising science is becoming humble. Dr. Gopichandran emphasized on the United Nation’s 50 years Faith for Earth Initiative. This is closely related to what His Holiness Swamiji has preached and practised for several decades. The initiative heavily weighs on spirituality connected to science. He said that the UN’s initiative speaks much on Nature based Solutions, which is clearly aligned with the frame work of the university and importantly, JSS institutions have adapted those core values through spirituality to contribute to the entire landscape of tools to raise the quality of life. Around 200 participants attended the session who were highly benefitted through a very interesting and interactive session. Prof. Raveesha mentioned that the session was indeed a revelation for the young generation who are in pursuit of knowledge and truth and based on such moral grounds connecting science and spirituality, India leads the sustainable development goals defined by the United Nations.
