His Holiness Jagadguru Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji Annual Oration 2020 & Teachers day Celebrations was held virtually at Sri Rajendra Centenary Auditorium, JSS Hospital on Saturday the 5th September 2020. The programme was organised by Academic Society of JSS Medical College in association with JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research.

His Holiness Swamiji gave blessings and highlighted that this years annual oration 2020 will be delivered by the eminent academician Dr. Randeep Guleria, Director, AIIMS, New Delhi and also informed that this oration will throw a light on combating and helping in mitigating the issue and challenges of COVID-19 pandemic. He also informed that along with this year’s annual oration program, Academic Society of JSS Medical College & JSS AHER is felicitating few eminent teaching faculty members of constituent colleges of JSS AHER on the occasion of teachers day celebrations which is held on 5th September every year.

Satish introduced the renowed and erudite academician Dr. Randeep Guleria, MD (Medicine), DM (Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine) who is presently working as DIRECTOR, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi & Dr. B.Suresh read the Citation award which was presented to Dr. Randeep Guleria.
Annual Oration Lecture by Dr. Randeep Guleria - Topic - Issues and Challenges in Managing COVID-19 Pandemic
Before starting the oration lecture, Dr. Randeep Guleria submitted his sincere pranams to His Holiness Jagadguru Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji and lauded the contribution done by His Holiness Swamiji in the field of Education, Health, Cultural, Spiritual arena.
Dr. Randeep Guleria narrated the story of origin of this dreaded viral infection and described the clinical profile and various issues related to diagnosis and management strategies of COVID-illness. He explained the various strategic plans, undertaken by All India Institute of Medical Sciences in combating this pandemic. He gave the detailed account of all the available therapeutic plans and recommendations by the ministry of Health. He highlighted the need for continued public participation in the form of, proper usage of mask, social distancing and eye shields to mitigate the spread of the virus. He alerted by the observatory comment that, “The spread of virus from an individual is maximum at the pre-symptomatic phase which is responsible for at least 44% of the transmission”. Viral stages include phase of viremia to an hyper inflammatory phase which is a consequence of an exaggerated immune response to the initial infection and can cause multiorgan failure. He stressed the need to put into use of artificial intelligence to detect early cases in remote areas through a computer based radiological grading system which is currently being tried at AIIMS, New Delhi.
Though we have not seen the peak of the pandemic yet, treatment measures are likely to change from laid down guidelines to individualized therapy. The governmental response in the form of lockdown and economic measures were meant to delay the surge in the number of cases, ramping up of infrastructure and triage isolation, diagnostic and critical care facilities. He also opined that the case fatality rates are much less in India, due to various reasons. He also opined that there are lot of efforts in many countries including India to develop vaccine, however for safety and efficacy trial data, it may take minimum of 3-4 months to get a safe and usable vaccine. He answered many questions related to Covid-care, raised by our doctors and administrators very effectively and meticulously. Nearly 500 doctors participated in this webinar.
