Hand Hygiene Practices - Department of OMFS

A training program ‘HAND HYGIENE PRACTICES’ was organized by Infection control committee (ICC) JSS DCH Mysore in coordination with Dept. of Health system management studies, JSS AHER and Hospital Infection control dept JSS MCH on 7th & 8th of January 2021. A blessing of His Holiness Shri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji was sought and the program started. Dr. Sathish. R, Convener, ICC introduced the resource persons to the audience.

All the ICC members, team, 1st & 2nd yr post graduates and nursing staff were the participants. The participants were divided into 4 batches, 2 batches per day (11.00am -12.00pm and 12.00pm – 1.00 pm), around 92 people participated in the program.

Resource persons were Dr.Shalini( Assistant professor , Dept. of health systems management studies ), Ms. Roopa & Ms. Manjula (Hospital infection nurse, JSS Medical college and hospital).Dr.Shalini gave introduction to hand hygiene practices by emphasizing the importance of the same in professional and daily life specially now due to COVID – 19 pandemic situation, she also informed the importance of hand hygiene practices from NABH point of view.

Some of the important aspects which they spoke about are • History of hand hygiene, • Standard precautions, • WHO standard, hand hygiene steps and movements was explained and demonstrated, • Different types of hand hygiene methods (hand rub, hand wash & hand scrub) was explained in detail along with its clinical applications, • Challenges and strategies in implementing the hand hygiene practices. A video was shown, explaining the methods and types of cross infection due to lack of proper hand hygiene.

All the participants were made to perform hand rub technique under supervision, one on one basis, their understanding of the six steps and five movements in hand hygiene was evaluated and corrected wherever it was required. All the participants were informed to follow the hand hygiene practices regularly where it is required.
