On the occasion of world hearing day on March 3, 2020, the department of otorhinolaryngology, head and neck, JSS Medical College and hospital organized a public awareness programme and deafness detection camp at JSS Hospital. This was attended by patients, public and medical and nursing staff and students. The theme for this year is “Hearing for life, don’t let hearing loss limit you.” The welcome address was given by Dr B G Prakash, Professor and head department of Otorhinolaryngology. The event was inaugurated by Dr Guruswamy , Medical superintendent , JSSH who enlighten us with his words on the importance of early detection , evaluation and correction of deafness. Dr. Ghori S K, Deputy medical superintendent also enlightened the gathering about the newer technology used and appreciated the department’s success on the various achievements and performing cochlear implantation on children born deaf. The special invitees were Dr Suresh Babu M , Deputy director, JSS Hospital and Dr Akkamahadevi , professor Dept. of Anesthesiology, JSS Hospital The department has successfully performed cochlear implantation on sixteen children who at present are undergoing auditory verbal therapy at JSS hospital. A few of these patients were a part of our awareness program who showcases their newly formed auditory verbal skills by singing rhymes and counting numbers from one to ten. On march 1st, 2020, for the same occasion. This department conducted a painting and drawing competition for children between Six to fifteen years. A total of 75 enthusiastic children participated in the event and exhibited their artistic skills. The event was concluded with a vote of thanks and national anthem.
