An Overview on Cancer Research at Center of Excellence in Molecular Biology and Regenerative Medicine (CEMR)

Thumb

Dr.M.V.S.S.T Subbarao is currently working as a professor in the department of Biochemistry, JSSMC, Mysuru and can be called as the soul of “CEMR” lab within the department. Sir is a pioneer in tissue/cell culturing and plays an important role in the research credentials of JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research. Dr. Subbarao’s visit to JSSCP, Mysuru was to sensitize the students on “An overview on cancer research at the Centre of excellence in Molecular Research & Regenerative Medicine”. Sir started the lecture with the importance of cancer and why he chooses more of his research in the field, which included cancer statistics. The growing statistics indicates cancer to soon take over cardiovascular diseases becoming the primary cause of death among the world population. Then sir moved on to discuss about the 2018 Nobel Prize winners for Medicine & Physiology to their contribution in cancer treatment using negative immune system regulation and briefed about the process. The introduction to CEMR lab started by inauguration of the department, its established vision and mission etc. Dr. Subbarao then went on to explain the hurdles they faced to setup the lab which included outdated equipments and lack of funds. He discussed on how he failed in the initial days to harbor funds for the department and how government of India rejected his fund applications on melanoma, his major area of research. Sir then spoke on how gradually they found rays of hope by able to get small funds from companies and the government and also how the university helped them well in time. Now sir runs one of the heavily funded colgate- palmolive project in association with dental college within the university. Progress of the department was then pictured with a lot of sophisticated equipments including nanodrops, well established cell culture facilities, various electrophoresis units etc. Sir then gave a brief into the major assays the lab performs which include SRB, MTT, MTS, brdU, apoptosis assays, CAM assays, PCR & western blot techniques. He also discussed the major research areas of other researchers in the department & revealed that they could setup an Nrf2 platform for its inhibitors and activators. Dr. Subbarao concluded his talk by inviting students into the lab and instructed the procedure to be followed for the same.
