One Day Training Program On SAFETY MEASURES FOR HANDLING CHEMICALS IN THE LABORATORY

PREAMBLE One day training program on safety measures for handling chemical in the laboratory was organized by Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysuru on 14.10.2017. Mr. K. N. Krishna Prasad, was invited as the expert to explain and practically demonstrate the handling of different class of chemicals and the first aid measures that would be required in case of any accidents that may occur during a chemical experiment. Mr. K.N. Krishna Prasad, is a trained trainer and has immense experience in handling chemicals. Mr. K.N. Krishna Prasad, a B.Sc. graduate from A.M.I.E. (India), completed his master in Industrial Hygiene and Safety from SRU, Chennai. Mr. K.N. Krishna Prasad, has worked in government organizations D.F.R.I. (Dehradun) and D.P.P.C.(Punjabi). He is also member of Institute of Standards Engineers, American Industrial Hygiene Association, National Safety Council and Indian Society for Training & Development Dr. B. Vishwanathan, Lecturer, Dept. of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysuru delivered the welcome address. Dr T.M. Pramod kumar, Principal, JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysuru, Mr. S. Puttarajappa, Administrative officer, JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysuru and Dr. G.V. Pujar, Professor and Head, Dept. of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysuru were the dignitaries. Dr T.M. Pramod and Dr. G.V. Pujar, highlighted the importance of the care that need to taken while handling chemicals. Lighting the lamp ceremony was conducted by all the dignitaries. The program was conducted for the technical and laboratory staff members; a total of twenty two members were benefited by the training program. The morning session was on theoretical aspects, concentrating on classification of different types of chemicals and organic solvents; the care and precaution required while handling was explained. The presentation also highlighted the right way of using, storing, transferring the hazardous / toxic chemicals. The importance of material data sheet of a compound was also introduced and the first aid measures required during any accidents was also educated. He also stressed on extra precaution during handling highly oxidizing and flammable materials. The session continued with the use of fire fighting materials; using different types of fire extinguishers with respect to the different class of fires /fire accidents. The session indicated the correct use of an eye wash station and the emergency wash shower during a chemical splash or contamination. The use of safety goggles, gloves and lab coats were explained to the participants. The first aid in case of any chemical injury or burns was explained. The morning session ended with the key saying that “Prevention is Best than Cure” The post lunch session was the practical demonstration of the safety measures and was conducted in the Pharmaceutical chemistry laboratory. The participants were assessed for the right use of the chemical, handling, and fighting of the fire was also demonstrated. The participants were grateful and highly thankful to Dr. T.M. Pramod Kumar, Mr. S. Puttarajappa, Dr. G.V. Pujar, Dr. B. Vishwanathan and JSS University for arranging this training program and also expressed that program has been an eye opener and helpful for them in their regular laboratory activities. They also expressed that the training program has also enlightened them to act upon any such emergency situations and help the needy fellow mates in any such accidents. The participants also thanked for providing them with all the safety materials like goggles and gloves. They also expressed need of the lab coat which was agreed upon by the organization. I, B. Vishwanathan personally thank Dr. T.M. Pramod Kumar, Mr. S. Puttarajappa and Dr. G.V. Pujar for providing me an opportunity and entrusting for arrangement of training program.
